Weird question to be asking in a newsletter, I suppose, but here we go.
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and not because of the candy... although, you know, yummy chocolate! We're in a new house this year, our first time living in a real neighborhood. When the HOA had a BBQ last month, I made sure to ask people, "What's the trick-or-treating like around here? Do we get anyone?"
As it turns out, we live in the 'rich' part of town, which is funny to me, because--ha ha ha--we are not rich. We are blessed and we are comfortable, but this neighborhood is one the kids flock to because it's one of the 'best'. They say trick-or-treaters will be coming on both the 30th and the 31st, because a lot of people don't like to Halloween or perhaps to disturb people on Sunday.
So I went to the store, and I bought two of the biggest bags of candy I could find. Then I sat there and stressed for a few days, wondering if 700 little pieces of chocolate would be enough. So I went and bought more candy, and threatened everyone with death if they touched so much as a single piece before the big days. I now have 1500 mini chocolate candy bars and a crippling fear that we might be egged if we run out of candy. But if I buy more bags and we don't have a lot of trick-or-treaters, I'm going to be stuck with a LOT of candy that I don't want to eat.
I feel silly. I'm 48 and I've never lived in a neighborhood big enough for Halloween. I feel like this is one of those adult things I just haven't prepared for. It's a mini adult sort-of fail, but with chocolate. Maybe. If there's enough to go around.
What do you guys do? Does anyone else live in a popular Halloween neighborhood? How much are you planning to give away?
