“Little mouse.” He instilled his voice with enough disapproval to make her freeze on the spot. With three large steps, he closed the gap between them, encircled her waist, and lifted her from the chair. “Chairs are for sitting, stepladders are for climbing.”
Unwilling to let go of her, his hands lingered on her hips.
Beth glared at him, the effect of her scowl slightly diminished by the fact she had to tip back her head to do so. “Well, I had a chair and not a stepladder.”
He compressed his lips. If he laughed now it would ruin his authority, and he did object to her doing reckless shit and her language. It was a sufficient reminder to let his mirth die down.
Unaware of his inner struggle, she grumbled, “Didn’t do me any good, anyway. I still couldn’t reach the top shelf. I fucking hate being small.”
He growled under his breath. “And I don’t appreciate your swearing. We’ve discussed it, haven’t we?”
She lifted a shoulder in a nonchalant gesture he didn’t buy. “Well, it is who I am. You can take white trash from a trailer, but you can’t make trash less trashy.”
His head spun at the information she just volunteered. “There is so much wrong in your statement, I don’t even know where to begin. So let me start by saying, the next time I catch you swearing you’ll end up over my knee.”
“You wouldn’t.”
He narrowed his eyes and trapped her gaze. “Wouldn’t I?”
For long moments she stared back. Nash held his breathing evenly and didn’t move. Beth’s gaze dropped. Good girl.
“Sorry.”
Etiquette lessons were starting now. “Use two words.”
“What?”
“I want you to address me with respect. You don’t want to call me Daddy or Master, so use my name when you address me.”
“Oh.”
He let the silence between them stretch.
“O-Okay, Nash.”
“Good girl.” He cupped her cheek and tilted her face. “Now, what was all the ruckus about?”
“I was restless and wanted to start on the dress I designed. You remember the drawing?” Pleased she wanted to work on the dress after all, he nodded and she continued, “Only Diana put the supplies on the top shelf in my closet, and I couldn’t reach the da”—she swallowed the obvious curse, gave him a quick glance, and amended—“materials.”
Now he allowed a smile to break through on his face. “Good save. How about I fetch your supplies? However, sewing will have to wait.”
“It does? Why?”
“Because I came to collect you for some exercise.” He let go of Beth’s waist and stepped past her and into the closet. Without any problems he took the sewing kit and bundle of blue shiny fabric from the top shelf and held them out to Beth. “Is this all you need?”
“Yes.” She grabbed for the handle of the sewing basket, but Nash held on. “Da—darn, you’re fussy.” With a put-out face, she amended, “Yes, Nash.”
He leaned in and whispered, “You can’t possibly know how it pleases me when you use my name.”
