Over the years I have walked with people to their own deaths. It is quite sobering. It is very humbling to be in the presence of some of these great saints in their final weeks. My wife Kerri was one of those humbling experiences. She worshipped her way into God’s presence.
This chapter of Matthew begins with Jesus’ announcement regarding His coming crucifixion. Then He is at a leper’s house and His meal is interrupted by a woman anointing Him with expensive ointment.
Remember, Jesus is a young man. His life has been one of increasing popularity. His disciples anticipated an earthly kingdom with Jesus as the King, and them reigning with Him. Thirty-three year-olds don’t generally regard death as an immediate reality like Jesus did in this chapter. Jesus acknowledges the anointing is preparing him for death.
This woman was led by God to do “a beautiful thing” for Jesus. She will be remembered for eternity for performing this sacrificial act of anointing Jesus and getting Him ready for death. When others thought she was crazy, Jesus commended her.
This story prods us to applaud events and people in our lives that glorify Jesus. Every time you see Jesus lifted up by others words or deeds, take the opportunity to encourage them to keep going, to keep lifting up Jesus.
