He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Recently my daughter researched sleep and dream patterns. She talked about the need for fasting two hours before bedtime and how to prepare for a restful night. That sparked our conversation regarding dreams. We spoke of stress dreams and nightmares. We realized that our dreams revealed our fears.

In the passage above Jesus has just calmed the sea and the wind. Two positive actions, but the disciples were fearful of what Jesus had just done. His power displayed in such dramatic fashion unnerved them. They were not expecting Jesus to calm the wind. They had seen His healing and demon confrontations. They gladly listened to His preaching and telling of parables, but the power over nature was unexpected.

Jesus equated their fear with a lack of faith. Their limitation of Jesus, even after the miracle, is surprising. Have you ever received a major answer to prayer to only turn around and be fearful of a new situation confronting you? Today may be the day to write down all the events in your life where Jesus has demonstrated His power in your life and in your friends lives. Keep that list handy in your Bible and refer to it when fear of the future raises its ugly head.
