There are stories that capture us, and then there are stories that cause us to stagger. This is a story that knocks your legs out from under you. The readers first response is, “Did I read that right?” It is hard to put together a great nation with a dead progenitor*. It strains the mind to put a loving creator God with “and offer him there as a burnt offering.” The Bible is outlining the plan and struggle of the whole book. God will send His son to be slain by humanity. The heart of the Father God is huge for His own son. The loss of communion with His son as He bore our sins was felt so strongly that all of creation reacted.

In Genesis, the next verse tells us that Abraham got up early, saddled his donkey, and set out on a three-day journey. The moment Jesus entered the womb of Mary, God’s plan was set into motion. Not three days on a donkey, but thirty-three years living among us. Jesus took every step intentionally to lead Him to the cross.

Rarely do we contemplate the agony Jesus faced for us. Rarely do we consider the great love God the father had for both Jesus and us. Take a few moments to meditate on the cross borne for you and the loving God that sent His son for you. To aid you are the lyrics from the song What Wondrous Love Is This:

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.
