Dear friends,

2021 is almost drawing to a close. To end the year in a satisfying way, I would like to offer a bit of balm for your story-hungry souls.

It is almost time for:

COMING NOVEMBER 18, 2021

Join me on a fantastical, dystopian adventure. We will follow a young hero, Eodain Atheneumson (also known as Termite), who lives six-hundred years into the future and faces some pretty staggering challenges.

The Knowledge Seeker practically wrote itself. It was meant to be! I am thrilled with the result and would like to think it is my best work yet. I guess I'll find out whether you agree with me or not, in your reviews. :)

The successful completion of this story would not have been possible without the keen eye of some dedicated beta readers and the support of Cristy Watson, my editor. They spent many hours dissecting the manuscript and giving me quality feedback, which allowed me to elevate the story to a new level. It takes a village to write a book!

What's up in the neighbourhood?

"It's raining, and pouring..."

Yes, a very wet autumn has arrived. That's fine. I had so much work that I wasn't tempted to spend time outside anyway.

It was a challenging month. I've been dealing with weeks of on-and-off migraines. Nothing seems to alleviate them. They make it hard for me to concentrate and I lost a lot of time because of them. Also, Facebook decided my ads were "offensive" (??) and I got kicked out of the advertising platform (which is part of my bread-and-butter). It took me three days to get back in, with no explanation whatsoever. I wasn't too worried though, because I know this happens to authors often and we have no clue as to why this happens. And, lastly, the surprise access to a BookBub Featured Deal also brought on a ton of work. This type of deal doesn't come by often, so it's important to set it up correctly.

I did, however, take some time off to grab some pumpkins at the pumpkin patch, but they were so soggy that they collapsed in a sticky ooze before we even reached Halloween. We also got to see an awesome, blood-chilling Halloween display on... Rae Street! Eek!

November 2021 reading list:

Pumpkins by Kevin Miller

If they wouldn’t have planted those pumpkins, especially in that spot, maybe none of this would have happened . . .

Fifteen-year-old Jeremy Fisher has always been an outsider, but now that he’s been convicted of a crime he “sort of” committed, his status as a small-town pariah has just been made official. Bullied at school, branded a criminal by the community, and grieving the loss of his father, who just left one day, the only bright spot in Jeremy’s bleak world is Roxanne, one of the most popular girls in school who happens to take a shine to him—or is it just pity?—in the midst of his troubles. As the community prepares for Halloween, Jeremy notices something strange is afoot, and he suspects it has something to do with the ghastly jack o’ lanterns that are mysteriously popping up all over town. Before Jeremy realizes it, he and Roxanne are caught up in a desperate struggle to save their community from a supernatural force that may have a closer connection to the two friends than either of them realize.

A spooky, paranormal thriller with a touch of romance and a whole lot of mystery and suspense for everyone for young adults and anyone else who likes a good scary story!

The French Baker's War by Michael Whatling

image

Absence isn’t a hole. It’s a presence living inside you, eating its way out.

Occupied France, 1943. Returning home from the daily hunt for the rationed ingredients necessary to keep his family pâtisserie open, André Albert finds his four-year-old son in the street, his wife gone, and a Jewish escapee cowering behind the display case.

Without Mireille, the foundation of André’s world crumbles. He desperately searches for her, but finds more trouble than answers. Lives are further jeopardized when he agrees to hide Émilie, the escapee, and a Nazi officer shows up to investigate Mireille’s disappearance.

André will do anything to bring his wife home, catapulting him, their son, and Émilie on a perilous journey impeded by temptation, past trauma, and stunning revelations.

The French Baker’s War is as relevant today for its themes of duty to strangers and sacrifice for family.

The Neighbor You Don't Know by Shane Shepherd

image

After countless years of preparation Mission Terra Firme One is finally ready to commence and give Earth the answers it has long waited for, about the planet Neighbor.

The TSS Cartographer is about to arrive and its First Officer Baldwin “call me Win” Tavares believes that he might just be able to touch his hand to that rocky ground and that’d be enough for him to learn everything there is to know about their old Neighbors, the things they’d done and what they’d left behind.

But not everyone is as kind-hearted or has such noble intentions, and Neighbor holds more mysteries than anyone could have imagined. Exploring it might open the gates for a flood that threatens to drown everything, and Win must make decisions that hold his life, and that of all around him, at stake.

Space Pirate Roberts by Jay Toney

image

Plundering innocent worlds; that is Doc Roberts’ job and he is good at it. He is awarded a Letter of Marque and a territory to hunt in exchange for his service to the Alliance and of course, a cut of his take.

The Alliance government can't openly operate in Coalition territory without starting another war, so they use privateers like Captain Roberts to destabilize governments and cause unease among the people, in hopes that they will ask for Alliance protection.

Cheating and treachery cause Captain Roberts to reevaluate his loyalty. He can live with a little pilfering, but not outright stealing from him and trespassing on his planet. The Alliance has gone too far. It is time to teach them that there is a price to pay for stealing from him.

The Alliance sends a snobbish young captain, Captain Thornton, to assassinate Doc's wife. Her death is the start of outright war, at least for Captain Roberts. Now, he is both a pirate and a rebel, with people on both sides of the border who either love him, or want him killed.

After fighting a duel with the Alliance's promising new captain, torturing him, and leaving him for dead, he has made powerful enemies in the Alliance hegemony. The Alliance military leaders want to make Captain Roberts suffer like he has made their rising star suffer.

One man can only do so much, and Doc is getting tired. It is time to pass the reins of command to his son. But first, he must crush his son's dreams and teach him what it means to be an Alliance citizen.
