What I'm writing
You may know this already from past emails, but Long Winter is a book I just finished writing and it's the first in a duet along with Signs of Spring. The books are about Robbie, a rancher who raised his two younger brothers, and Lance, his youngest brother's best friend, who's always had a not-so-secret crush on Robbie. Robbie's ranch is a little nontraditional, in that the animals he cares for are a herd of mustangs in long-term holding at Robbie's ranch after being removed from the public land where they were born.
In reality, many horses are maintained on private land through federal contracts, just like the ones in my story. The supervision of these facilities is via the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). You can learn about how wild horses (and burros) are gathered from public land and maintained after capture with a little internet research, and you'll quickly learn that the BLM's practices are controversial to say the least. Of course, there's not a simple answer to balancing all the competing interests, but mustangs and the strange bureaucracy around them has always fascinated me, and I'm enjoying writing about it even if it's just in the background of the story.
I'm working on the first draft of Signs of Spring, but I haven't been doing as much actual writing as I have planning out the story and making sure that I'm not botching the setup for later books. I think one of the most alluring things about writing for me is the side characters. Every time I introduce one, I can't help daydreaming about their love story, and what it would be like, and who with. But at the same time, I have too many series planned to write 100 books in a single series, so most of these stories will probably go untold. That being said, there are a few in the Wild Ones series that I intend to explore if readers enjoy the first two books, and I want to be sure I lay the groundwork for them just in case.
What I've been reading
I just finished Anhaga by Lisa Henry, which was a very enjoyable fantasy novel with MM romance. If you read in that genre, then I highly recommend it.
Chapter TEN of Undertow!
I'm still plugging away at Undertow and I'm happy to bring you Chapter 10! I anticipate that the completed story will have between twenty-five and thirty chapters, so we're almost halfway there.
