Bi-weekly Business Book 📚
Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder
(Spanish Version, English version)
by Nicolas Nassim Taleb, a famous Lebanese-American scholar, trader, and author known for his work on risk, uncertainty, and randomness.
- What: not your average business book, and not so easy to read, but it is one of my favourite business and economics books of all time. Taleb introduces the concept of systems that not only withstand shocks, volatility, and uncertainty but that actually grow stronger from disorder: the true opposite of "fragile". An overall essay on how modern-day economics work and how we can take our best chances in navigating it.
- It's for you if: you are a bit more experienced as a reader and are interested in learning how individuals, organizations, or systems can benefit from volatility, uncertainty, and stress. However, if you are sensitive to dismissive opinions or prefer a more conventional, less provocative writing style, you may not enjoy this book as much.
- Key takeaways:
- "Antifragile" systems don’t just withstand shocks, they improve and strengthen from them, unlike fragile systems that break under stress.
- Exposure to randomness, stress, and disorder is essential for growth and improvement, both personally and in organizations.
- The "Lindy Effect": the longer something has survived (an idea, technology, tradition, a book, or pretty much anything else), the more likely it is to endure into the future.
- The "Barbell Strategy": combining extreme caution in some areas with bold risk-taking in others can make you more antifragile.
