How to negotiate your offer (scripts inside)

Nov 19, 2025 2:09 pm

Hi ,

You have landed a job offer congrats! 🎉

Now comes the part most people dread: the money talk.

These conversations touch salary, benefits, and expectations, and the way you handle them sets the tone for your new working relationship.

Below is a practical, guide you can review and adopt.

1. Know your value (in 15 minutes)

  • Check market ranges for your role, industry, and city (e.g., Glassdoor, Indeed, Payscale).
  • Benchmark yourself above the midpoint if you bring certifications, leadership, or niche skills.
  • Think total compensation: vacation, benefits, flexibility, growth, PD budget, not just base pay.
  • Pay transparency note (Canada): many provinces require salary ranges in job ads. Ontario’s new rules start Jan 1, 2026 for employers with 25+ employees (exact pay or a tight range).

Pro move: Go in with a range (aim slightly above your minimum) so you have room to land where you’re happy.

2. When to negotiate

After you receive a verbal or written offer, before you sign.

During interviews, focus on fit and value; once you’re the top candidate, discuss details.

Swipe file: what to say (copy/paste and modify)

Phone: initial counter

“Thank you so much for the offer—I’m excited about the role. Given my experience in [past role/skill] and the scope of [new responsibilities], I was hoping we could get closer to $X–$Y. Is there any flexibility?”

Email: initial counter

Subject: Quick follow-up on offer

Hi [Name],

Thank you again for the offer, I’m genuinely excited about the role and team. Before finalizing, could we revisit compensation?

Given my background in [skill], I was targeting $X–$Y. Would you be open to a quick conversation?

Best,

[Your Name]

Email: set up a call

Subject: Quick call to discuss offer

Hi [Name],

I’m excited about the opportunity.

Could we do a 10–15 min call to review a few details of the package before I finalize?

Best,

[Your Name]

If salary is “fixed”

“I understand if the base is set. In that case, the things that would make this sustainable for me are an extra week of vacation and a professional development allowance. Is there room to explore those?”

Collaborative tone (not pushy)

“I’m really excited about the role. Based on my background in [X] and the scope, I was hoping for $Y. If salary can’t move, could we consider a signing bonus or a 6-month salary review?”

If you feel nervous

“I admit I feel a bit nervous bringing this up, but it’s important. Given the responsibilities and my experience in [X], could we look at [specific ask]?”

If you have another offer

“I want to be transparent that I’ve received another offer at $Z. This role remains my first choice because of [reason]. If we could adjust closer to $Y (or consider a signing bonus), I’d be ready to commit.”

How often to counter

Usually once.

Package your priorities together:

“My top priorities are base salary, an earlier performance review, and hybrid flexibility. If we can align on those, I’m happy to accept.”

3. How to close (in writing)

Subject: Offer acceptance

Hi [Name],

I’m delighted to accept the [Role] at [Company] with a base of $X, [bonus/benefits], and [negotiated items]. Please confirm the start date [DATE] and that the offer reflects these details.

Thank you—I’m excited to join the team!

Best,

[Your Name]

4.Three quick scenarios

1) Low offer

Thank them, share market data calmly, ask about flexibility. If not possible, pivot to alternatives (PD budget, 6-month review, extra vacation).

2) Strong offer, salary fixed

Acknowledge the band and ask for meaningful perks (vacation, PD budget, flexibility, earlier review).

3) Competing offers

Be honest, emphasize why they’re your top choice, and give a clear path to close (higher base, bonus, or added vacation). Even a partial move can be a win.

Confidence builder

Negotiation isn’t about being demanding, it’s about aligning expectations so you start strong.

Practice your lines, role-play with a friend, and remember: respectful negotiation is expected and often successful.

If this was useful, forward it to someone interviewing right now.
