How to Unearth Business Analysis Tasks and Activities in Your Previous Experience!
Sep 11, 2023 4:12 pm
Electric start!
Our new learners not only got a chance to mingle and delve deep into their aspirations but also had a first-hand experience of drawing insights from our past achievers from the recent cohort. These achievers came forward with a treasure trove of tips and tales from their journey to arm our newbies with tested and trusted tips to enable them land their dream jobs ASAP.
While the session was bursting with enthusiasm, it was also riddled with questions. The most prevalent amongst them were - "How can I identify the business analysis tasks in my previous roles?" and "How can we convince potential hiring managers that we've practiced business analysis without the title?"
To demystify this, I got Vivian (one of our new Learners) to share a real-life scenario of tasks and activities in her past role as a customer service officer.
On a typical day, Vivian takes a customer call, employs her excellent communication skills to listen intently to the customer's complaints or requests. She then uses elicitation techniques to collect more information and CONTEXT to enable her understand the underlying NEEDS. Sometimes, Vivian offers an immediate SOLUTION. On other occasions, she collaborates with other colleagues (INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS), conducts detailed analysis, and then presents her findings. She might also have to coordinate the implementation of the SOLUTION to ensure it meets the customer's NEEDS. Implementing the SOLUTION will introduce CHANGE(s). These actions not only resolve the customer's issue but also creates VALUE for all relevant STAKHOLDERS, be it in the form of increased customer satisfaction, reduced costs, increased profits, or minimized reputational risks.
But here's the twist - Vivian never considered herself a business analyst. But by using this scenario, I demonstrated how many professionals are practicing the tenets of business analysis without the label.
The takeaway from this illustration? You might be applying and practicing business analysis principles and techniques in your role, even if you havenβt realized it! π―
