Why elicitation sessions make you anxious (and how to fix it)
Apr 16, 2026 2:50 pm
Hi ,
You have an elicitation session coming up.
And suddenly,
Your mind goes blank.
You don't know where to start.
Sound familiar?
The anxiety isn't about the meeting.
It's about not having a framework to prepare.
You show up unprepared.
The session goes nowhere.
Stakeholders start questioning your competence.
All because nobody taught you how to prepare.
Here's what to do instead 👇🏾
1️⃣ Get clear on your goal
Ask yourself: "What do I want to achieve by the end of this session?"
If you can't answer that in one sentence, you're not ready to book the meeting yet.
2️⃣ Identify what information you need
Where does it live?
Is it documented somewhere?
Is it sitting in someone's head?
If it's with a person, what questions will help them understand your ask and give you exactly what you need?
3️⃣ Make a list of question to help elicit the information needed
Write your questions in advance.
Use AI to brainstorm if you need to.
4️⃣ Prepare like a pro
✅ Create a clear agenda and send it ahead of time
✅ Prepare any pre-read material to send ahead
✅ Invite the RIGHT people, not everyone, the right ones
✅ Book the room or schedule the virtual call
When you follow these steps, your session runs smoothly.
Stakeholders see your competence.
And the anxiety? Gone.
Elicitation anxiety is not a personality problem.
It's a preparation problem.
And preparation is a skill you can learn.
