Now it’s time to make your first three months count.
Harvard Business School career coach Matt Spielman offers a proven five-step framework to set you up for long-term success:
Detail the What, Why, and How
Work with your manager to map out a 90-day roadmap. Define what you’ll learn, why you are structuring it this way, and how you will deliver.
Break it into three 30-day phases and set regular check-ins to track progress.
Identify Stakeholders
Pinpoint the colleagues and leaders you must meet early. Clarify with your manager who influences your role and prepare thoughtful questions to uncover strengths, gaps, and opportunities.
Conduct Stakeholder Interviews
Schedule focused 30-45 minute conversations to build relationships and collect valuable insights. Decide how you will capture notes, typed, handwritten, or recorded so nothing gets lost.
Synthesize & Share Insights
Analyze what you’ve heard (and what you haven’t). Spot key themes and potential inconsistencies. Create a concise SWOT analysis and, when appropriate, share a summary to provide fresh perspective.
Build, Share, and Execute the Plan
Turn findings into 3–4 clear, actionable goals using the ACHIEVE model :
- Action-Oriented,
- Consequential,
- Hard but doable,
- Integrated,
- Explicit,
- Visualized,
- Endpoint-focused.
Link each goal to specific actions and deadlines.
Use this structured approach to learn quickly, earn trust, and show measurable impact, starting on day one.
