A while ago, I agreed to read a fantasy novel on a friend's recommendation (name of friend and novel blocked for reasons that will become obvious.


This book, a debut by someone who had only recently gotten interested in writing, had some interesting premises--a bold setting, a cast of colorful characters, a unique twist on tried-and-true fantasy tropes...


... And I made it three chapters in before deciding to set it down for good.


It turns out that you need more than good ingredients to make a good book!


In this author's case, her tone was wildly inconsistent and ranged from Miltonic grand style to puns and overt gimmicky-ness over the course of a few paragraphs.
