I spin around a little too quick, bumping my hip against the barstool. I'm caught up in a whirlwind of my work boots, meant for comfort, not agility, and the thick flowing fabric gathered around my legs. I stumble around, trying to catch my balance, and splat. I faceplant into a hard…chest?
I’m going to kill my sister after I…
I place my hands on the rock, molding my hands up and down until I realize I’m feeling this guy up. He clears his throat, and I snatch my hands away. My wine is all over his suit, and I glance around for something to mitigate the damage.
"I'm so sorry," I mumble more to myself than the chest. Both of his hands grip my elbows, and heat overtakes my body.
“Accidents happen.” The rumble of his voice and the smell of his cologne send my heart racing.
I'm shocked into a stuttering apology. "These damn boots and all the fabric. You'd think they'd give a little more room between these stools. But I guess they weren't expecting all these hips. I prefer my Levi's, but I'm sure they'd toss me out with all these fancy folks." It's like I can't shut up, and I don't know why.
I grab a wad of little cocktail napkins from the bar dabbing across his navy-blue suit, trying to dry the wine, trying to ignore the firm form underneath my hands. The only indication I get that he's aware of my personal 💩 show is his throaty chuckle. And that sends a signal south, and I'm really going to kill my sister. Focusing on Shiloh, not the hum between my thighs, seems much easier than dissecting this sudden…attraction?
“I’m going to kill her.”
His large hand covers mine, stopping my feeble attempt to clean the stain, especially the droplets scattered on his crisp white shirt. Dry cleaning will set me back a pretty penny if cleaning it is even possible.
"I'm sorry. I'll give you my card and cover the dry cleaning. I turned, trying to catch my sister and….” A large dog steps forward with a wagging tail. I look up at the fine man I'm feeling up. "You brought your pet to a banquet?"
"He's my wingman." His smile is slow and crooked. I look away, ignoring the flutter of moths in my stomach. I'm too old to have butterflies, but this man is a cutie. His chest felt like a brick slammed against my face and his sidekick ain't bad either. He releases my elbow, and soft clicking garners my attention.
“Is that…
"A walking stick? Yes." He grips the black handle, lowering the white stick to the ground.
I almost ran over a blind man, and now I'm feeling him up in public. "I am going to burn in hell."
“For what?” He chuckles.
"Throwing red wine on your suit, feeling you up in public, and strangling my sister. And not in that order." I chuckle, looking at the walking stick again and then at him. His face is turned in my direction.
"The suit will live, and what did your sister do to deserve such a fate?"
“The list is endless. Did you intentionally leave out the feeling up part?”
“Of course, what man doesn’t want a beautiful woman to grope him in public?”
"It wasn't really a grope," I counter, finding more to appreciate about this man.
“Ahhh…it was. I’m sure you passed over my chest a few times too many. But who’s counting?”
I glance off. “Okay, you caught me. You feel like a damn rock under that suit.”
“I’ll give my trainer a bonus.”
"You should." I smile up at him. He has dirty blonde hair, and his eyes are the prettiest shade of blue.
A comfortable silence settles over us. He pats his hands around and lowers to a barstool. And suddenly, I'm glad I came tonight. I glance at the empty seat next to him, knowing I need to find Shiloh. I look out into the crowd for my sister and glance back at the stranger.
“What’s at the top of this list?”
I tip my head and glance over at him, comfortable with telling the truth. "I think tonight's another one of her matchmaking tactics."
“That’s nice of her.”
“I’d rather eat my hat than be tied to another dog. No offense.”
“None taken.”
“Not you.” I smile despite myself.
“Oh…”
"Your sidekick." I'm amused, and I'm sure he doesn't see it. "What's his name?"
“Rocky.”
“And his owner?”
"Troy Valentin, Miss…"
