Fear flutters through my stomach, but fear can’t live here. I walk with my back against the RV. Then, I turn my face toward the bike. “My husband’s up the road.”
“You won’t mind if I wait until he returns.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“What kind of husband would leave his wife on the side of the road in the middle of the night?” His voice is full, and I turn my head from side to side, trying to find his exact location. The forest is in front of me, and I’m between the door of the RV and the bike.
“Just leave us.”
“Us?”
“Fuck,” I whisper. “We don’t want any trouble.”
“What are you planning to do with that bat?”
I jump and stare into cold, dark eyes. “I’ll take your head off if you come any closer.”
“I’ve had threats of all kinds. But never one from a beautiful woman holding a bat.” His smile isn’t warm or inviting. I would say his smile is predatory if it wasn’t for the spark of interest in his eyes, and there’s no way I’m going there.
I can’t. I’m awful at picking men. The best thing to ever come from a man was my son. The thought of Jonah renews my resolve, and I hold up my bat, inching toward the forest to get closer to the door and my son.
“There’s a first time for everything. Just hop on your bike and ride off into the night. No harm, no foul.”
“Your bat is…cute.” He takes a step.
“Look, don’t make me bless your ass.” I grip the handle, ready to play ball. “You’ve done your good Samaritan duty. Get back on your bike and leave, mister.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Damn. Just go. We’re fine. Just go home.”
“This is my home. You’re on the side of my mountain, and there are worse guys out looking for fun than me.” His eyes sweep my body. I don’t feel threatened, but I don’t lower my bat.
“Fine. You have five seconds.” I prepare myself. This isn’t my first fight, nor my last. There’s not a person in sight. There’s no calvary and no husband coming to save us.
“Are you always this charming?”
“Always. Can’t you tell? I’m Mary, fucking, Poppins.” I take calculated steps, moving the battle to the front of the RV. “Who sent you?”
“Who?” His face twists in confusion. “Woman, I’ve been on my bike for nearly ten hours. I want to shower and go to bed.” I swing, and he jumps back. “What the fuck?”
“You’re fast for a tired man.” I smile, lunging at him. The bat swooshes near his nose, and his head dips back.
“Lady, give me the fuckin’ bat.”
“No, get on your bike and leave.” I swing, aiming for his side, and he moves fast, but I’m faster. I draw back, trying to take off his head.
“What the fuck is wrong with you? I’m stopping out of the kindness of my heart.”
“Thank you.” I slash left and right. We’re dancing around, and something tells me he could take my bat. I rock back, giving myself some room. “Leave us alone.”
“I’m too tired for this shit.” He snatches the bat, and I’m left blinking. “Go back inside, and I’ll stand here until your husband clears the hill.”
I take several steps back with my hands up in surrender. But I’m moving backward. His eyes lock with mine.
“Fuck… There is no husband. Is there?”
“Just leave.”
“Mommie.”
“Jonah…”
“Yes, ma’am… What?” They say in unison, and I freeze.
“Your name is Jonah?” I ask the man with my bat.
“They call me Preach.” He stands there looking at my son.
“Preach, we don’t want any trouble. My RV is old, and I’m just trying to get to Haven. But it’s too late to walk into town.” I level with him, glancing over at Jonah. “Baby, don’t move.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Then he looks at Preach. “Please don’t hurt my Mommie.”
“Your mom’s okay, Little Man.” Preach drops the bat.
I pick it up and then scramble back to my son. Jonah wraps his arms around my waist, and we both watch Preach.
Will they succumb to the irresistible pull of their desires, or will the reality of their lives keep them apart? Can love blossom amidst the secrets and challenges they face?
There's only one way to find out: dive into the pages and let the romance sweep you away!
Happy reading, and may love always find its way into your heart!
