DNA Day Sales and Free Scanning ideas...

Hope everyone has had a great week and can carve out a little time in their weekend for some family history!

Sunday, April 25th is DNA day and MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, and LivingDNA all have sales that end that day. You can visit the OnGenealogy Facebook page for any other deals I've seen: https://www.facebook.com/OnGenealogy.

Today, I'll be organizing my family history papers. I'm tackling postcards and recipe cards.

Covid-19 restrictions are starting to be lifted where I live, so I called the local Family History Center and scheduled a time to visit and use their digital scanners.

If restrictions are being lifted in your area, you can use this Find a Family History Center link to look up a center near you and then select "Website" where you can read about the offerings at that FHC. Specifically, I look at the "Hardware and Equipment" because I want to know what type of scanners they have. They also list "Databases and Software" which usually include FamilySearch affiliate services (collections restricted to affiliate libraries), Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast, Swedish ArkivDigital, and more.

The FamilySearch Family History Centers are all free to the public, but you might need an appointment to visit because those that are reopening are still limiting the number of visitors, and appointments are required.

I look up all the FHCs near me, within an hour's drive, because sometimes it's worth the drive to have access to the newest equipment at a facility that's further away.

Today my plan is to use their fast-feed photo scanner to digitize old postcards and recipe cards (index cards). I'm spending my morning sorting and getting them in the proper order for scanning. Here's a blogpost, To Do List for BEFORE you Scan: https://www.ongenealogy.com/to-do-list-for-before-you-scan/, that explains the prep process.
