SUSTAINABLE GIVING

May 11, 2026 4:05 pm

Hello Family,

In the world of philanthropy and social impact, we often talk about "pouring our lives out" for others. But if you keep pouring without ever refilling your own cup, you will eventually hit a wall. Sustainable Giving is the art of managing your energy so that your light can shine brightly for decades, rather than burning out in a few years.

To move mountains for others, you must first ensure you are standing on solid ground yourself.

A Lesson from My Book: Growth is Personal

In my book, Growth is Personal, I am very open about a season in my life where I felt overwhelmed. After the birth of my fourth child, I was managing four young children under the age of seven and trying to find my personal and professional footing. I felt a deep sense of dissatisfaction because I wanted to do more, yet I was exhausted by the daily demands of my environment.

I learned a vital lesson about "Me Time" as a tool for sustainability. I realized that taking time for self-care—what I call an "act of self-love"—is not selfish; it is necessary. By waking up an hour or two earlier than everyone else, I created a "precious window" for reading, prayer, and reflection. This dedicated time allowed me to grow personally before the responsibilities of the day took over.

If you want to avoid burnout in your mission to help others, you must prioritize your own "mental and spiritual refueling". You cannot give what you do not have.

A Story from the PDAC Foundation

At the PDAC Foundation, we see burnout as a real threat to our mission. Our team is passionate, and it's easy for us to want to be everywhere at once—reaching every school and solving every problem. However, we have learned that the key to maximum "Social ROI" is focus and pacing.

We practice what I call the "Oxygen Mask Principle." Just as you are instructed on an airplane to put on your own mask before helping others, we encourage our volunteers and staff to maintain their own personal development. We don't just "do" work; we schedule "Fun & Rest" as a category of success. We have found that when we take breaks and recharge, the quality of our outreach is much higher. Sustainable impact is a marathon, and we are committed to running it at a pace that keeps our team healthy and our hearts joyful.

"The atmosphere of love and joy is where all the lovely things are. Stay in that atmosphere."

This Week’s Challenge

Are you running on empty? This week, schedule a "refueling hour." It could be a walk, a quiet time for reading, or simply a nap. Don't feel guilty about it—remember that your rest is an investment in your future ability to give.

Keep growing,
