A Short Story About My Personal Growth Journey
I grew up in a learning environment, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to be precise. My parents were educators in their different fields, my mum was a teacher before she got into the civil service, and my dad a lecturer in UNN. All my neighbours were university staff/lecturers, and all my friends were staff kids. My childhood house was about 200 meters away from the university’s children's library where we always went to read, borrow books and play. I have 5 older siblings and great positive influences in my life in the area of education.
Even though I had all these positive influences, I never heard the word Personal Development. If I ever heard it, I never understood what it was about until later on in my 30s.
In late 2018, Lizzy, my friend invited me to her graduation ceremony at the Leading Ladies Business Institute, where she had just concluded the Basic Leadership and Entrepreneurship course.
The founder Pastor Dotun Arifalo, popularly known as PD talked about personal development and its importance, she also talked about goal setting and values. I was literarily blown away because I had never heard of these things and knew nothing about them. I just knew in my heart that this was great information, something that I ought to learn more about, so in February of 2019, I enrolled myself at the institute and this is still one of the best decisions of my life as it completely transformed my mind-set and my life.
During the program and afterwards, I bought every book I could lay my hands on about personal development. I studied everyday and gave myself reading goals and targets. I began to discover more about myself, my strengths and my weaknesses. These discoveries helped me focus more on my strengths, which are in the areas of educating/empowering people, sharing information and gathering and storing resources.
If I had been exposed to these things earlier on in life, surely I would have made better decisions, been more focused and aware during my secondary school and university days. I would have been more Intentional.
Now as a young mother, this birthed a deep desire to help my children learn and understand the power and importance of personal development early in life. I began writing down some of the things I was learning into easy-to-understand concepts so that my children can learn these things early, as an introduction to personal development. That was why and how I started writing the dear child book series. Titles such as personal growth, self discipline, goal setting, vision board, attitude, etc. I started teaching my children the concepts of personal development. They have been setting and achieving their goals, being more aware, focused and self disciplined, making their vision boards and cultivating leadership skills.
In 2021, we realised that school children can also benefit from this knowledge. We registered Foundation for the Personal Development of African Children, and our mission is to transform Africa, one child at a time, to help children discover and develop themselves so they can reach their highest potential.
Our big goal (Project Personal Development) is to reach and inspire 1,000,000,000 (One Million) junior and senior secondary school children in Africa by 2030 with the awareness of Personal Development. The Personal Development Guide Book is a support resource we share for free. Download Personal Development Guide eBook
If young children are able to learn and apply the life lessons and success principles taught in the guide book, they will be able to make better life decisions, define and stand by their personal values, set and achieve goals, make better friendship and decide their paths in life based on the discovery of God’s special gifts and talents in them. They will live a life of purpose, be a Blessing to themselves and their world. There is no telling what heights they can reach.
I am encouraging everyone reading this to get on your personal development journey today.
I am cheering you on to be the best you were created to be.
Without Personal Development, you cannot reach your highest potentials.
