August is Heating Up

Romance novels have varying heat levels, often described using terms like clean, sweet, sensual, steamy, and spicy, or with numerical or chili pepper scales. These levels indicate the explicitness and detail of sexual content within the story. Clean or wholesome romances focus on emotional connection with little to no physical intimacy, while spicy romances feature detailed depictions of sexual encounters.
For my latest exploration into love, I remained at a level two for the characters. I wanted the readers to get a sense of the people, the choices they were making to build a life together. The first intimate encounter with the characters, I wrote Mae's reaction to sharing a night with Thom. Later in the novel, I placed the interaction on the page with the door open, using soft descriptions, versus in your face action. There are books I write where the heat levels are at a four, and it is on the page, complete with grunts, sweat between the boobies, plus more. This book, was not that kind of story, and Thom Brown was not that kind of guy.
Oh, but the next one will be.
Here's a breakdown of common heat levels in romance novels:
1. Clean/Wholesome/Sweet:
Focus: Emotional connection, character development, and romantic relationships without explicit sexual content.
Intimacy: May include kissing, cuddling, and romantic gestures, but no on-page sex.
Example: Stories like Hallmark movies or YA romances where intimacy is implied or behind closed doors.
2. Sensual/Mild:
Focus: Intensified romantic feelings, with some physical intimacy, but not explicitly detailed.
Intimacy: May involve kissing, light touching, and suggestive scenes, but with euphemistic language.
Example: Some historical romances or thrillers with romantic elements that "fade to black" during intimate scenes.
3. Steamy/Spicy/Hot:
Focus: Detailed depictions of sexual encounters and physical intimacy.
Intimacy: Explicit language, on-page sex scenes, and exploration of various sexual acts.
Example: Many contemporary and erotic romances fall into this category.
4. Explicit/Nukear:
Focus: Very detailed and graphic descriptions of sexual acts, sometimes including BDSM or other non-vanilla content.
Intimacy: Extensive and explicit descriptions of sexual encounters, often with a variety of acts.
Example: Some erotic romances with very detailed and explicit content.
5. Other Factors:
Subgenre: Heat levels can vary within different subgenres of romance (e.g., historical, contemporary, paranormal).
Reader Preference: Heat level is subjective, and readers have diverse preferences for the amount and type of sexual content they enjoy.
Author Style: Some authors may write across a range of heat levels, while others specialize in a particular style.
When choosing a romance novel, consider the heat level that best suits your preferences. Websites and book blogs often provide heat level ratings to help readers make informed choices
