👉 Screw motivation, and focus on this instead!
Jul 15, 2023 2:06 pm
Hey .
I'm not sure if you've noticed this, but whenever we want to make lasting changes in our lives, we often focus way too much on motivation and willpower.
But something we don't realise that matters even more than those two is actually our environment.
Most of the things we do daily are just a result of the environments we find ourselves in.
For instance, we picked up our phones because we heard an alert.
We noticed snacks on the counter, so we ate them.
If the first thing we see on the couch is a book, we check it out.
We don't realize that even the smallest environmental change can affect our choices and actions.
You may think you have full control over your life all the time, but most of the time, your decisions are based on what is around you.
However, there is some good news in this.
You can set up environments that support the good habits you want to have and keep you from doing the bad ones you want to break.
But before we get into how to optimize your environment to support your habits and goals, it is important to understand what drives our habits in the first place, which we call triggers.
Every habit starts with a trigger, and we are more likely to notice those triggers when they are very clear. But if they aren’t obvious, we won’t practice those good habits.
For instance, it's likely you won’t cook if the ingredients aren’t already in the house.
You will likely miss the workout when you keep leaving your gym trainers at someone else’s house.
You probably won’t read the book when you keep leaving it at the back of the couch.
So here are a few ways you can change your environment to make it easier to stick to your good habits and harder to do the bad ones.
If you want to eat fewer snacks, put them at the back of the cupboard.
If you want to read more, keep the book in a place where it is easy to find.
If you want to spend less time on your phone, leave it in another room.
In each of these situations, you are changing your environment so that it is either much easier to do the good habits you want to have or much harder to do the bad ones you do not want to have.
For a habit to become an important part of your life, you have to make its triggers an important part of your environment.
The most practiced habits normally have several triggers scattered all around the environment.
The truth is that we don't need to be motivated or have willpower in order to act, all we need are the right triggers in our environment.
You have to remember that if you can adjust the environment in which you live in a way that exposes you to more positive triggers and fewer negative ones, you will not only practice more good habits but also have a greater sense of control and power over your life.
đź“™BOOK RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK
This is arguably the best book I have ever read. It’s kind of been like a revelation for me. Where do I start?
It has made me think about my own beliefs and knowledge and change how I feel about them.
I used to be very stubborn about what I thought, but this book taught me how important it is to welcome doubt and see it as a chance to learn and grow.
I know, weird, right? But that was why it was so awesome!
Here are four key takeaways from the book:
1, The Power of Rethinking.
Our knowledge and beliefs should not stay the same. It is healthy and even necessary to rethink our ideas and change our minds when we get new information.
2, Embrace Being Wrong.
Accepting that we all make mistakes can be freeing. When we are okay with being wrong, we are more willing to learn and grow.
3, Think Like a Scientist
Think like a scientist and treat your beliefs and opinions as hypotheses that need to be tested, not as treasures that you need to protect.
4, The Importance of Listening.
Engage with people who have different opinions. Listen more, argue less, and be ready to change your mind.
