😖 This habit is killing your productivity

Hello .

Today, I want to talk about why multitasking is one of the biggest killers of productivity. To make this point, let me share a study with you.

A professor named Clifford Ivar Nass once did a study at Stanford University, where he watched how hundreds of students behaved.

He put them into different groups based on how many things they usually did at once.

The students who are most addicted to doing more than one thing at once usually switch between more than four tasks.

For example, they would use their phones to respond to messages, take notes while reading a textbook or listening to a podcast, and sometimes check their Twitter feed.

Then, each group of students was shown a screen with several red and several blue arrows.

The purpose of the activity was to count the number of red arrows.

At first, all of the students gave correct answers quickly and without much trouble.

But as the number of blue arrows went up, students who were used to doing more than one thing at a time found it harder to count the red arrows as quickly or in the same amount of time as students who didn't do more than one thing at a time.

The reason was that their brains had been trained to pay attention to everything at once, no matter how important it was, while the brains of the other students had been trained to focus on one thing at a time: which in this study meant counting the red arrows and ignoring the blue ones.

Want to know what’s sad about this study? This is something that almost all of us suffer from.

So many of us are so used to multitasking that we don’t realise that it doesn’t make us more productive.

It makes us less productive, perform less work, and make little to no progress.

So how do we solve this multitasking epidemic?

Simple. Commit to doing one thing at a time.

It might seem like combining tasks will save us time and make us more productive, but scientific evidence suggests the opposite.

Our brains can handle billions of pieces of information, but they can only handle a few dozen pieces per second.

So people who say they can do a lot of things at once are really just switching quickly from one thing to another.

And if you try to do too much at once, your work will be bad and disappointing.

By doing one thing at a time, you'll make fewer mistakes, get more done, and be less tired at the end of the day.

📙 BOOK RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK.

The one thing by Gary Keller

I have recommended this book before, and I have to again because it was so valuable and filled with gems of wisdom. It just clicked for me when I read it.

This book completely changed how I think about being productive. Here are my top five takeaways from the book.

1. Focus on "The One Thing": The book is mainly based on the idea that we shouldn't split our attention between many tasks.

Instead, we should focus on one important task that makes everything else easier or unnecessary.

2. Domino Effect: The book also focuses on the idea of the domino effect, which says that if you knock down the most important domino first, it will be easier for the others to fall.

This principle helps me organise my tasks so that when I reach a key goal, it makes other tasks easier. This creates a chain of successes that keeps me motivated and helps me get things done.

3. The 80/20 Rule: The author also talks about the Pareto Principle, which says that 20% of your efforts will give you 80% of your results.

So I started looking for and focusing on the 20% most important tasks, which made the biggest difference in how well I worked and how much I got done.

4. Time blocking: Giving your most important tasks blocks of time has been a game-changer for me.

By making and protecting these "productive blocks," I've been able to improve the quality of my work on my main goals by a lot.

5. Beware of Multitasking: Similar to what today’s life lesson is, the book also warns against the idea that you can do more than one thing at a time.

After I realised this, I made a conscious decision to focus on only one task at a time. As a result, I've seen a big change in the quality of my work and results.
