🔋 The 5-Step secret to becoming more Disciplined than ever!
May 13, 2023 4:00 pm
We're nearly halfway through the year, and I can imagine that, like a lot of people (myself included), you've probably got a list of goals that are gathering dust.
You might even be wondering if you can reach them. The short answer is yes; you can achieve them. But you'll need something called self-discipline.
Now, before you roll your eyes and sigh, "Not this again," let me tell you a little secret: achieving self-discipline isn’t as difficult as people make it seem.
You can come up with a strategy to achieve it and finally accomplish the results you are after.
To make this journey to becoming your disciplined self a lot easier, I have broken it down into five steps.
The what, the why, the how, the when, and the “then what?”.
Let’s break each down.
1. The What
What exactly do you want to achieve?
The first step to being disciplined is to know exactly what you want to achieve.
Make sure your goals are as clear and specific as possible.
When we aren’t clear about our goals, we waste time doing things that don’t bring us closer to them.
This is why it's essential to be clear and know precisely what you're going for.
2. The Why:
This is basically your purpose.
What drives you and gets you out of bed every morning?
If you want to be disciplined, you’ve got to have a reason for it.
Come up with something solid that will keep you pushing forward and trying even if, initially, you aren’t getting the results you want.
E.g. retire your parents, become financially free, etc.
3. The How:
How do you plan to achieve your “what”?
Developing good habits that help you reach your goals is key to becoming disciplined.
Figure out the most important habits you need to develop to reach your goals and make a conscious effort to build them and make them a part of your life.
“We don't rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems” - James Clear
E.g. working out and eating healthy if you want to get fit, reading if you want to get smarter, etc.
4. The When
When do you plan to achieve your goals?
Deadlines give you something to work toward.
When a goal doesn’t have a deadline, it lacks urgency and a sense of importance, and you are more likely to procrastinate and accomplish very little.
However, if you have a deadline to meet, you'll be more likely to complete your tasks on time.
Even if you don't meet your deadline, you'll still be a step closer to your goal than you were before you started.
5. The “Then what?”
And finally, the last step: “Then what?”
The “then what” is how you respond when you make a mistake or don’t follow through with something you said you’d do.
Basically, the idea here is that if you don’t follow through with this, then what?
Self-discipline shouldn’t be seen as a life-or-death situation.
It is more of an “enjoy the process, try your best, and if you don’t follow through, be easy with yourself and get back up” kind of thing.
So try to live by these five steps, and before you know it, discipline could be second nature to you.
đź“™ Book recommendation of the week
$100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau
A lot of people have asked me to recommend books on how to make money, and Chris Guillebeau's $100 Startup is one that I can't recommend enough.
This book is so easy to read, and it is full of amazing examples and stories of how people with little or no money went from being poor to becoming rich.
If you’re looking to supercharge your journey to wealth, I’ll definitely recommend you check it out. Here are four takeaways from the book.
- Start with what you already have.
It's important to start your business using the skills, knowledge, and resources you already have.
You don’t need a million dollars to start a business.
You can literally start a business that requires a skill that you can learn for free, a service/product you can create for free, and customers you can acquire for free.
- Focus on giving customers what they want.
If you want to run a successful business, it is all about helping customers and solving their problems.
Simply focus on learning what your customers need and giving them a solution that meets those needs well.
By providing value and exceeding expectations, you can build a loyal customer base and keep making money.
- Learn from case studies and real-world examples.
The book gives many case studies and examples of successful entrepreneurs who started out with few resources.
These stories teach us important lessons, give us ideas, and give us useful advice.
You can learn valuable lessons for your entrepreneurial journey by studying successful people's experiences.
- Don't wait for the perfect time to take action and try new things.
Just taking action and trying new things is kind of like the most important idea in "The $100 Startup."
Don't expect to have everything figured out before you start a business.
Instead, take calculated risks and learn from your mistakes.
You're more likely to find a successful business model if you take action and keep trying.
