Once upon a time, there was a farmer, and the farmer had a horse. He loved this horse a lot.

It was his pride and joy that this horse helped the farmer earn money for his family.

One day, the horse ran away, and everybody in the community heard about what happened to the farmer. So they came running up to the farmer, and they said, “Oh my God, your favourite horse ran away; that is so bad.”

And the farmer looked at them, and he said, “Maybe.” The next day, the horse comes back. But he does not just come back by himself; he brings three wild horses with him. 

Everyone in the neighbourhood heard, so they all went back to the farmer and said, "Oh my God, we heard what happened. You now have four horses. Oh my God, what good luck!" The farmer looked at them and said, "Maybe."

The next day, the farmer's son tried to tame one of the wild horses. Well, an accident happens, and the horse kicks him off, and the son breaks his leg in three places. 

Now everybody in the community comes up to the farmer, and they say, “Oh my god, those stupid horses; look at what they did to your son; that is so bad.” Again, the farmer responds, “Maybe."

The next day, the military came to the farm looking for young men to draft into the army. When they see the farmer's son, they say, "We cannot draft him because his leg is broken."

Well, everybody in the community heard about what happened, and they ran up to the farmer and said, “Oh my god, what good luck! Your son doesn't have to go to war. Our sons got drafted. What good luck you have!”

And the wise farmer takes one last look at the villagers and says, "Maybe."

The moral of the story is that when something bad happens to us, it is all too easy for us to develop negative attitudes. But the thing is, when something happens to us, we do not really know if it is good or bad.

If you do not see the whole picture, you cannot really tell what is good or bad.

Many people would not be as wise or successful as they are now if they had not gone through their own setbacks, tragedies, and trials and learned from them.

So the next time something bad happens to you and someone says, "Man, that is a real bummer," just be like the farmer: be patient, stay calm, and say "maybe."
