Thank you for helping take No Typewriters / No Talking from a silly idea at 3:37am to a real thing where people come and turn up and write (and don’t talk or bring typewriters).

Our Editor-in-Chief Jackson and the rest of the No Typewriters / No Talking Team are humbled and inspired by your support. So much so that we’re going to be back in 2024 with more sessions. More on that shortly...

But first some stats

Since our first ever session at Tempo Rubato in March 2023 there have been:

• 19 sessions across 4 venues
• 289 attendees
• 1100 average words written per person per session*
• 318,000 estimated number of words written at No Typewriters / No Talking in 2023**

What did people work on?

People worked on amazing range of things. Some people even decided to not write! Here are a selection of the most mentioned things:

Graphic novel, memoir, character bios, cosmic horror, technical stuff, short story, poetry, artists statements, thriller novel, meditation script, didactic stuff, Children’s story, my first novel, my second novel, screen play, lyrics, journaling, sci-fi, sketched other attendees, architectural drawings, free writing, used the prompt, and editing.

Feedback we’ve incorporated

You asked. We delivered.

“Wine in a wine glass would be better.”

We opened the bar at Tempo so you could have a glass of wine (or scotch or beer) while you work!

“Change to Humanitix.”

DONE and we bloody love ‘em.

“The end. Needs to be more streamlined to help us gradually come out of flow state.”

We now have a meditation chime (which is hopefully more soothing than Jackson’s voice).

“Not that I didn't like it, but just there was a mention of prompts but I didn't immediately see them”

We’ve made the prompt signs bigger and more numerous.

“Sitting too close together.”

We’ve bought more tables for our venues! We can now comfortably seat about 30 people at Tempo and can lug around the tables to other places if we can’t source more.

We read every bit of feedback we get, so thank you for providing it! As per above, we do listen and we do take action. But we also gosh darn love praise. Here are just a few (of the many) lovely things you’ve told us you love about No Typewriters / No Talking.

No Typewriters / No Talking will return in 2024

We’re locking down dates. Sussing things with venues. And since you’ve scrolled this far down (and hopefully read) the email, we can reveal the first session in 2024 will be 6pm-8:30pm on Wednesday 17 January at Tempo Rubato.

Because we didn’t get to have an ‘End of Year’ shindig, the first one back will be a THANK YOU party and we’re going to mix it up. You’ll be able to — for one, and one time only — bring a typewriter and talk. Don’t worry: there will still be a silent (typewriter-free) component before the drinks.

We’ll have a ticket link up in early December!
