The view from the other side - and some new book series

Hello from the continent.
I'm now no longer living in the United Kingdom, and the culture shock is... subtle.
There's ups and downs (better healthcare, less considerate drivers), but overall things are much the same as they were over in the UK. Let's face it, we've all got many more things in common than the differences provocateurs leverage to push us apart.
Imagine if an alien race were to come visit Earth. We have trouble co-existing with people who have the same genetic roots, same linguistic roots, same religious roots, same technology and near-identical moral values to our own. How on earth (or off it), are we going to get along with a species that doesn't share that evolutionary and cultural heritage?
Maybe we'd get on quite well.
Maybe we don't get along with each other because we keep looking for differences when those are outnumbered a hundred-to-one by the similarities. When we find a difference, we give it more importance than it deserves. Our similarities challenge our desire for a separate national and cultural identity so we fight it.
Aliens would give us that, at least. A sense of unique identity in comparison to them. In the brief moment before they judged us unworthy and squished us.
Reading Suggestions
If you're short some reading material, here's a collection of first-books-in-a-series that you can pick and choose from. Maybe you'll find your next binge-read in this list.
My offering is the first episode of Emily Voss's adventures in New York City, which you can download here, if by some miracle you've not read it yet.
The rest of the collection can be tracked down by clicking on the image or the button below:
Thank you for reading this week's particularly short email, and I hope to steal a few moments of your attention again in two weeks time.
All the best,
Nick.
