Hi !
This week has been a test.
We had the stomach bug make an appearance in the house - not once, but twice. There have been more loads of laundry than I care to count. Sleep has been... optional.
And somehow, through it all, life has kept marching on: work deadlines, client calls, soccer practice, and an ever-growing pile of things that we still haven’t gotten to.
We have been running on fumes.
(And coffee. Lots of coffee.)
I’m sure you’ve had a week like this one where everything feels like it hits all at once... The house is a mess, the kids are down for the count, and you’re trying to remember when you last had a proper meal.
That has been us.
And yet, amid all the mess, I haven’t felt totally untethered. Because even when life feels unpredictable, one part of my world stays steady: the numbers in my business.
Not all the numbers. Just five.
Five simple, essential numbers I check each week to know where I stand. They help me breathe easier, even with everything else spinning.
The 5 Numbers Every Business Owner Should Know
1️⃣ Cash on Hand
What do you have in the bank right now? Not incoming invoices. Not projections. Actual, available cash. This is your financial oxygen.
2️⃣ Monthly Revenue
What’s coming in the door this month? This gives you a pulse check on how your sales engine is doing.
3️⃣ Monthly Expenses
What’s going out each month? Knowing your burn rate helps you spend with intention - and avoid slow leaks that drain your profit.
4️⃣ Profit Margin
After you subtract expenses from revenue, what’s left? This tells you if your business is truly profitable (and working) - not just busy or big.
5️⃣ Break-Even Point
What’s the bare minimum your business needs to earn to cover its costs? This is your financial floor. Everything above it? That’s where freedom lives.
These five numbers act like your business’s dashboard. You don’t need to watch every dial or toggle every switch. Just keep your eyes on the key gauges.
Because when you know where you stand, decision-making gets easier. You’re not flying blind. You’re leading with clarity - even in the middle of chaos.
Business Finance in Plain English
Break-Even Point: Your break-even point is the amount of revenue your business needs to bring in each month to cover all its expenses (no profit, no loss). It’s the line between red and black.
💡 Why it matters: Knowing this number helps you make faster, smarter decisions. It tells you:
- When you’re safe to spend
- When you need to cut back
- And exactly how much more you need to sell to hit your goals
Think of it like this: If your business were a treadmill, the break-even point is the speed you need to keep from sliding backward. Go any slower? You’re losing money. Hold steady or go faster? That’s where momentum (and profit) builds.
So if your life has been a little wild lately (hello, fall viruses + sports + business ownership), I see you. And if you’re feeling behind or scattered, start here:
☑️ Check these five numbers
☑️ Write them down
☑️ Build a weekly habit around reviewing them
They won’t fix the laundry pile or magically reschedule the client calls...
But they will give you a bit more peace of mind and help you run your business like a true CEO, even in the middle of real life.
And if you’re not sure where to start with your numbers, or you just want a fresh pair of eyes on them... We’d love to help!
