Caught (Smoke and Shadows 1)
Chapter Twenty
The bright lights of Osaka soon gave way to the darker areas of the city where neon lights and flashing billboards had no place belonging. Towering apartments buildings made of glass and steel were replaced by warehouses of sheet iron and concrete block. Bustling streets gave way to quieter ones, and Takeshi didn’t hesitate to order his driver to ease back on the speed. It’d be too easy to fly past the address Kennosuke had sent them when the street signs and building numbers were hidden by shadows.
Thirty-minutes after getting the panicked phone call from his friend, Takeshi arrived at the dilapidated warehouse of rusting sheet iron and broken glass. The perfect place to stage a retaliatory attack against the one-man Takeshi had never thought would betray him. Foolish, naïve thinking that he was now paying the price for with the heavy weight of expectation on his shoulders and the ache in his chest Takeshi didn’t think would ever leave him.
For his crimes against the Shirokawa-gumi, for attacking the current head of the organisation, and potentially the death of the previous head, Yoshitake needed to die. Takeshi knew that’s what he needed to do, but when the time came, he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to do it.
He stepped out of the vehicle and pulled his jacket tighter as a cold sea breeze whipped up around him. Salt air laden down with the stench of diesel and exhaust fumes. Seagulls wheeled overhead as the last flickering rays of sunlight danced across the sky while in the distance Takeshi could hear the beeps of cranes as they lumbered through the port carrying steel shipping containers along its docks. An eerie silence hung over the entire area belying the tension building in strength as those who remained loyal to Takeshi and the Shirokaw-gumi descended on the location. More men than Takeshi had expected, bolstering his flagging confidence.
Striding across the gravel driveway, stones skittered ahead of him and slipped noisily beneath his shoes as Takeshi headed into the warehouse to meet with Kennosuke. He paused in the doorway and watched his friend pace the concrete floor, anger and fear pouring off the man in heavy waves. Takeshi couldn’t understand it to a degree, the heavy emotions that were assailing Kennosuke. Knew the man wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than Yoshitake’s death by his own hands. Takeshi couldn’t grant him that honour. Even if he wasn’t sure if he could kill Yoshitake himself, there was no way he’d grant that pleasure to anyone else either.
“Kennosuke,” he called out, startling his friend who spun around and pointed a gun at Takeshi. “Where is the bastard hiding?’
Kennosuke rubbed at his face. “There’s a small industrial estate further up the street. Yoshitake is holed up in the rear most unit. He doesn’t appear to have many men with him either, with only two patrolling the immediate perimeter of the warehouse unit and no signs of any other security system. It was why Brian and I were able to get so close to the building… so, we need to attack him now in case he has more men coming in from elsewhere in the city,” Kennosuke snapped, tightly restrained anger pulled harshly at his words. “I won’t lose my husband because you’re dithering over whether to kill the man who betrayed you or not.”
“But Yoshitake will be expecting us.” Takeshi rubbed at his jaw.
“No. He’ll be expecting me… expecting this to turn into another war between our organisations, and I promise you that’s exactly what you’ll get if you don’t haul arse Takeshi and act like the head of the Shirokawa-gumi.”
Takeshi sighed his friend had a point. “You’re right. We can’t wait any longer. My men will surround the warehouse while we make our way inside, rescue your husband and confront Yoshitake.”
“And we’ll go now?”
“Yes,” Takeshi replied, striding back out of the crumbling structure, and barked out orders to his men who rushed to comply.
Ten-minutes later, the two men Kennosuke had identified as being perimeter guards had been subdued, and Takeshi’s own men had taken up positions around the building, leaving no possible exit point unsecured.
Breathing out slowly and with an unusual sense of calmness, Takeshi reached for the door handle and threw it open hard. The element of surprise would have made their task easier, but they’d lost that advantage once Brian had been caught. Masking their presence was no longer Takeshi’s aim, but instead he wanted to ensure Yoshitake’s attention was focused squarely on him.
“Keshi… I guess shouldn’t be surprised you’re here,” Yoshitake said, brandishing a bloodied knife and broad grin. “But I must admit, I thought the Araki-gumi brat would foolishly storm the place without calling you first. Looks as though I underestimated him… and you.”
“I think you’ve underestimated many things, Yoshitake,” he spat.
“I don’t know about that…” Yoshitake jerked his head in Takeshi’s direction and men drifted out from where they’d hidden in the shadowy corners of the warehouse.
Takeshi watched as the men approached, guns drawn, knives glinting in the low light, and arrogant sneers firmly in place. Ten versus two… the men believed this fight would be over soon and that they would be the victors. But it was that arrogance that would see them all dead in the end. Takeshi had no intention of losing this fight, not while he still had a score to settle with Yoshitake. Retribution and vengeance were powerful motivators especially when the odds appeared to be stacked against you.
He ducked as the first man charged at him, sliding under the swinging arm, and twisting around behind his attacker. Takeshi grabbed the man around the throat and pressed the cold point of his blade into the man’s back. “You should have fired your weapon,” he whispered, sliding the blade between the man’s ribs before shoving him away and turning to deal with his next attacker.
A bullet ripped a hole in his jacket, grazed the skin of upper arm, and pinged off the concrete behind him. But before his second attacker—one slightly smarter, or maybe less arrogant than the last one—could fire off another bullet, Takeshi grabbed the man’s wrist and jerked him closer, twisting behind the man hard enough to dislocate his attacker’s shoulder which might have hurt if Takeshi hadn’t used the man’s body like a shield absorbing the bullets that had been meant for him.
Four down. Six to go.
Breathing hard, Takeshi yanked his blade free of the final attacker’s body and wiped the bloodied steel on his suit pants. He stalked across the floor toward Yoshitake, and left Kennosuke to deal with the battered body of his husband. Kennosuke might have feared for his husband’s life, but a quick glance at the man had left Takeshi in no doubt that killing him hadn’t been a part of Yoshitake’s plan. Everything had been about getting Takeshi here and finishing off whatever game his bodyguard…lover… trusted friend had started.
“It’s just you and me now.”
Yoshitake raised an eyebrow and snorted. “Am I supposed to find that proposition frightening?”
“Most people usually do,” he replied with a shrug.
“But I’m not most people, Keshi. I’m the one who taught you how to kill… how to kiss… and how to fuck.”
“That just means, you’ll get to experience first-hand how well I remembered your lessons.” He pressed the knife to Yoshitake’s throat, blood beading at its tip.
Yoshitake smirked and grabbed Takeshi’s wrist, holding it firmly in place. “Kill me if you want, Keshi… but we both know you’d rather be choking on this instead,” he sneered, grabbing a hold of Takeshi’s other hand, and pressing it against his hard cock. “Or maybe you’d rather hold that blade to my throat while I fuck you hard… dying in the throes of orgasm, does have its appeal.”
