SCOTUS declines to block vigilante Texas abortion law

Sep 02, 2021 8:31 pm

Let's talk about the law of unintended consequences, shall we?

What do you think is going to happen, now that women--even those raped--cannot get an abortion after six weeks (or when a fetal heartbeat can be heard), some will carry the fetus to term.

Some won't. What do you think they'll do? They'll travel out of state or leave the country. Some will take matters into their own hands.

Sales of the "morning after pill" will skyrocket.

And some women will die. Or kill themselves.

But Texas legislators don't care or haven't thought any of this through.

None of this even touches on the HOW this law will work (individuals can sue anybody or entity who participates in one of these abortions for $10,000). Talk about unintended consequences here...

Undoubtedly, I've missed a few likely outcomes. And that's where this gets really dangerous. Not that this law isn't already extremely reckless.

In other news, Social Security is nearing insolvency. This is not good. But it's 100 percent preventable. There just seems to be zero political guts to act on any of them.

Back in the very early '80s a guy named Alan Greenspan solved the social security problem then. Similar fixes could be made to fix it again, including some novel ones that we can talk about if you care to.

Social Security costs to exceed revenue for 1st time in 39 years

For the first time in 39 years, Social Security payments made to retired Americans this year, and every year after, will exceed tax revenues coming into the federal government in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic's economic downturn, according to a new government report.

Social Security payments for retired Americans will be exhausted in 2034 — a year earlier than previously predicted, says the 2021 report from the Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees, which oversees both programs. After that, tax incomes will only cover 76% of anticipated benefit needs. As for Social Security’s disability insurance program, those funds will run dry in 2057 — eight years earlier than previously predicted.
