You're the Builder I've Dreamed of - Vol. 1 Ed. 52

World Builders' Guild Newsletter

Whether you've been here for 52 minutes or 52 weeks, you, dear World Builder, are the reason this newsletter has found the success it has over the past year of publication.

What started as a quick way to put my thoughts into action on the art of world building turned into the greatest experiment and experience I could have imagined.

But, this is not about me.

This is about you.

This is about the challenge that we face each day: the inescapable urge to bring worlds to life. Let's affirm our commitment to curiosity, experimentation, and the pursuit of eternal creation.

We live for the joy of the process.

How did it feel when you assembled your first Lego set? What kind of magic pulsed through your heart while you gazed upon a refrigerator papered with your amateur artwork? Do you sometimes review your own writing and feel like you don't remember writing it? It's a slice of the divine. An out-of-body experience.

Know that you are capable of building worlds beyond imagination.

Making worlds helps us make sense of the world.

Our basic senses and mysteriously powerful brain patch together the useful delusion we call "life". The truth is we can't access the base nature of reality with the equipment we have. Building worlds of our own gives us the peek behind the curtain we so desperately crave. The silhouette of the truth sharpens, if momentarily, for those who know how to squint at it.

We are the architects. We can see the "code".

World building touches the infinite.

13 Floors. Inception. The Matrix. Westworld.

Worlds within worlds. If you're into simulation theory, then it's more like worlds within worlds within worlds.

How incredible a gift we have that we can exist in a singular realm and yet have access to any number of other universes at any point in time?

To paraphrase a famous quote: When you read a book you're literally looking at a dead tree and hallucinating for hours at a time.

This is the same power that gave rise to civilization. Religion. It's the magic that brought into being the great nations of the world.

You have the power within you to imagine the world you want, draw it forth from the space between infinity, impress it upon your own existence, and see it change lives in unspeakable ways.

Use this power for good. Always.

I trust you.

To future worlds,

Matt Ventre

As the first volume of The World Builders' Guild Newsletter draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank you again for being a part of this. I hope that the conversations we've started, the worlds we've imagined together, and the techniques we've explored helped you become a more powerfully creative individual.

Good news: We're just getting started.

In Volume 2, you can look forward to even more world building exploration like:

  • Inside looks at world-building projects in progress
  • Interviews and profiles with world building geniuses
  • More techniques and guidance on the craft of world building

We opened the flood gates with ideas and areas of interest, and now we have an opportunity to take your world building prowess to the top of its game.

Make a commitment to world building excellence.

Before I go, though, I want you to check out PlayArchitect Games and our upcoming Mixed Martial Arts tabletop roleplaying game, Legends of the Cage.

It's a fast-paced, dice-rolling, face-slamming, thrill-fest. Build a league for your fighters to compete in, roll a fighter or two, and start gunning for the championship belt.

You want to be there when this launches.
