We have these energy tanks.
There's a tank for physical energy. There's a tank for your emotional energy. There's a tank for intellectual energy. There's a tank for your self-esteem energy. Some people may have psychic energy tanks (?).
If one of those tanks runs to 0, you could die.
People don't charge into battle with a negative self-esteem tank. No winning general ever won a battle. Napoleon or Alexander the Great or George Washington or all the greats of history never ran toward an enemy thinking, "Eh, this might be it for me. Should've stayed home today and played on my lute or something."
I never took a worthwhile risk, one that could pay off in multiples, with a low energy tank.
If we're not careful, though, we can get stuck in the recharge station.
It happens all the time. My tanks run dry. There's a comfortable place where I go when I feel like there's nothing else that can help charge me back up. There's that sense of, "I can win here, I'm welcome here. Everyplace else is terrifying. I need to take a breath."
There's this idea that you should have something you're dominant in: a game, a song you play on your favorite instrument, a dance routine. It's important. When we're without guardrails, the walls are coming down around us, that's when we can go back to the thing we're just plain damn good at and reset our perspective. Recharge our energy stores.
"Things might be sketchy, but at least I can kick your ass in Pinochle." 9Photo by Edgar Colomba from Pexels)
The problem is when the recharge station becomes your whole world.
It feels spectacular at first, but once your tank is full, it's time to get back out there with your machete and your compass and start hacking your way through the jungle of life.
You can't do the same comfortable thing 5 nights in a row.
You'll lose yourself. Your tanks could go lower. What was once a comfortable embrace by the safe rules of the world you're in now becomes a hostile restraint.
Get your rest. Enjoy the comfort of the world you control.
Then break free.
To future worlds,
Matt Ventre
