What Every Da'i Can Learn from 13th Century Ertugrul

Did you watch the sensational Netflix series?
In 2021, I watched the popular Netflix series, The Resurrection of Ertugrul Ghazi or Diriliş: Ertuğrul. Ertugrul was an embodiment of the revival of the Ummah.
As I watched, I would take pen and paper, taking copious notes about leadership, economics, strategy, and political lessons from the series.
Ertugrul started as a leader without a title. He was just doing what needed to be done. Although he was the son of the nomadic Turkic tribe's (Kayi) leader, Suleyman Shah, he was not interested in social or political leadership. His only concerns were the protection and survival of his tribe.
One thing marked me most about Ertugrul. He was a remarkable learner. At every major event in his life, Allah would bless him with a befitting mentor.
For his spiritual growth, he had Ibn Arabi, who would strengthen him spiritually. He also learned a lot about the craft of leadership, and diplomacy through observation and participation, and especially from another mentor: Demirbilek, a wealthy merchant who taught him about trade and commerce, and statesmanship in addition to his warrior skills.
He was able to stabilise the economy of his tribe's land by learning from experts whenever they faced challenges.
He learned business, economics, carpentry, and how to close business deals from various people. He was so humble he learned from everyone, even his enemies.
The knowledge he acquired, coupled with his valour, got others to choose him as the supreme leader of all the nomadic Turkic tribes. Some were jealous. But those who knew leadership knew that he was the only capable person.
Yet he never stopped learning.
With his knowledge, he was able to ease the affairs of his people so much that Sultan Aladdin Keykubad I appointed him the Frontier Lord or Border Lord, The Uç Bey, a Seljuk Turkish military. This is a title given to the commander responsible for defending the borders of the Seljuk Empire against the malicious Templar Crusaders and the barbaric Mongols of Genghis Khan.
The moral here is clear: learning both the knowledge of the deen and that of dunya is essential for those defending the Ummah. And more important is utilising the knowledge to help the Ummah.
Just like Ertugrul, we must be relentless learners, humble enough to learn from everyone and every situation, and always ready to put our knowledge and skills into play for Islam.

P.S. The Diriliş: Ertuğrul was a work of fiction adapted from the life of the real Ertugrul who lived in the 13th Century. His son, Osman, was the founder of the Ottoman Empire. The fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1924 marked the fall of the last Islamic Khilfah.
