You're No Ordinary Muslim - Here's Why

Nov 30, 2024 8:53 pm

Salaam ,

Just so you know: there's no such thing as an "ordinary" Muslim – unless you choose to be one.

Look, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "All of you are shepherds, and all of you are responsible for your flocks."

Every Muslim is a shepherd, responsible for their flock. This is no small responsibility – you’re going to be assessed by Allah on this responsbility!

And that's what you call ordinary?

No, it's not!

And what do shepherds do? They lead, they protect, they guide.

They don't settle for the sidelines.

So if you think dawah is for "qualified people" or "the scholars," think again.

Scholars weren't born scholars – they started out just like the rest of us: unsure, learning, growing.

And guess what?

You have that same potential.

Dawah is our survival toolkit.

It’s how Islamic values and knowledge pass across generations. Without dawah, Islam…

fades.

And if you’re not doing dawah, you’re undoing it, bit by bit. You can't wait for someone else to do it. Islam won’t spread by itself.

This is what I'm talking about today:

  • Why "ordinary" Muslims can’t afford to sit this one out.
  • The tools you already have to do effective dawah.
  • How dawah deepens your own knowledge and connection to Islam.

You got time to learn or scroll through TikTok dances and watch Netflix? Then, you have time for this, too.

Let's be real: if Islam matters to you, you will find time for it. Dawah is the most profound way you can live your faith, because it forces you to understand it deeply.

No one becomes a better Muslim by staying quiet in the corner.

You grow through engagement, through challenging conversations, and yes – even through making mistakes.

If you’re feeling hesitant about dawah because you're "just a regular Muslim," here’s your sign to rethink that:

5 Reasons You Should Do Dawah (Yes, You!) Even if You're Busy

In order to grow in your faith and help others do the same, you’re going to need a handful of key elements:

1. Your Faith is a Gift – Share It

Faith isn’t just something to keep to yourself – it’s a precious gift, and sharing it is a way to express gratitude. When you tell someone about the beauty of Islam, you’re actually deepening your own appreciation of it.

2. Dawah Is a Growth Hack for Yourself

Want to understand Islam on a deeper level? There’s nothing like having to explain it to someone else. When you do dawah, you’re forced to confront gaps in your own understanding, which makes you a more knowledgeable Muslim in the long run.

3. Ordinary People Make Extraordinary Change

Think you need a title or qualifications to do dawah? Wrong. Every scholar started out as a regular person. What made them different was their desire to learn and share. The same is true for you.

4. If You’re Not Spreading It, You’re Losing It

Islam won’t spread by itself. If we’re not actively promoting and teaching it, it fades away. By choosing not to do dawah, we’re choosing to let Islam weaken.

5. You Have the Tools – Start Small

You don’t need a degree in Islamic studies to share a reminder about Allah. Start with what you know. Share a verse, an inspiring story, a reminder – every bit helps.

That's it. Here's what you learned today:

  • No Muslim is "ordinary." You're a shepherd responsible for guiding others.
  • Dawah is vital for the survival of Islamic values.
  • You already have what it takes to start – so start now.

Don’t just read this and move on. Pick one small dawah action to take today – even if it’s sharing this email with a friend or reminding someone of Allah.

That's it!
