Does this story sound familiar?

I stood in front of the elevator doors, my heart pounding against my ribs. 

The familiar metallic sheen reflected back an image of me that looked calm, but I knew the truth. My palms were clammy, and my thoughts were racing in a thousand directions. 

Today was the day. I had decided to share a bit about my faith during our morning meeting. I wanted to bring the concept of honesty in Islam to the team—a simple, relevant point—but as I rehearsed the words in my head, a quiet voice whispered, "Who do you think you are?"

It wasn't the first time this voice had spoken up. 

Every time I thought about mentioning anything even remotely Islamic at work, it was there, holding me back. 

"You’re not a scholar," it said. 

"What if you get it wrong? What if they think you’re trying to convert them? What if they think you’re weird?" 

The elevator dinged, and I stepped inside, feeling that familiar knot in my stomach tighten. The fear of being judged, of standing out, of being labeled, paralyzed me.

As I stood in the meeting room, listening to my colleagues discuss the upcoming project, my mind drifted. 

I thought of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and how he faced immense challenges when spreading the message of Islam. He was mocked, opposed, and even threatened. 

Yet he persevered—not because he was confident in himself, but because he was confident in the message. He knew it was something greater than his own insecurities.

I realized then that my hesitation wasn't about my lack of knowledge or fear of being judged—it was about my misplaced focus. 

I was making it about me: my reputation, my comfort, my fear of being misunderstood. 

But dawah wasn't about me. It was about sharing something beautiful that could benefit others. Even if it was just a small reminder about honesty, integrity, or kindness. It wasn't about delivering a perfect sermon. It was about planting a seed.

When it was my turn to speak, I took a deep breath. I kept it simple. I shared how, in my faith, honesty isn't just encouraged, it's a fundamental value. I spoke about how being truthful helps us build trust, both in personal and professional relationships. The words came out naturally, and I saw a few colleagues nodding. 

No one looked offended or uncomfortable. The knot in my stomach began to loosen, and a sense of calm washed over me.

After the meeting, one of my co-workers came up to me. 

"I liked what you said about honesty," she said. 

"I never knew that about Islam." I smiled, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with pride, but everything to do with purpose.
