Hi There,
Here's my weekly update for Feb 18, 2021. Also, psssst, you're the first to hear about this.... This coming Spring I'll be doing a giveaway of some pretty sweet Museum Gear. Keep a look out on MuseumTrade.org or the Instagram feed.
May Your Bubble be Ever on the Level,
Matt
🗒️ The Working Side of the Metropolitan Museum of Art 1928
Hi Gang, Here’s a really nice one from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrating 150 years last year (2020), WoW.
I’m sure they had many gala’s planned for the whole year, hopes, dreams, and fundraising dashed by COVID-19.Nonetheless, I’m super glad they released this beauty back in January.
Look at all the craftsmanship and time it took.
There are definitely some areas where things haven’t changed all that much, art preparators, museum technician, conservators, woodworkers, metalsmith, all working hand in hand to get it done.
🗒️ How-To: Resources for Basket Mounts
Historic baskets are both highly functional and highly artistic creations.
They show incredible skill by the weaver, but they also tell us about larger community life.
Baskets illuminate stories about the connections between peoples, as well as between people and their environments.
Because of this tangible connection to daily life, baskets were one of the most commonly collected types of objects for museums during the 19th and 20th centuries.
We have all likely seen some examples of basketry in storage, or have some perception of the care that goes into basketry preservation.
🗒️ How Do You Create a Faux Brick Floor for a Fireplace?
What makes being an art preparator, museum technician, art handler so much fun is solving problems and puzzles in not enough time.
This was a fun and weird one that I solved, but not with 100% satisfaction.
PREPARATION So why would we need faux brick in the first place?
We were being offered a set of furniture, commissioned by the Flood family, from someone selling his home.
Time was short, we knew the place would sell fast in the San Francisco Bay Area.
🗒️ BASICS: Opening a Crate, a Few Solid Art Installer Tips
It’s been a long while since I, or anyone has added anything to the site.
I thought I’d have all this extra time to dig into content creation.
I did organize and centralize all my content, like everything that I’ve shot over the past 10+ years, but it’s been hard to write about it.
Here’s a piece I did for the Crocker Art Museum (With COVID-19 museums are now professional content creators).
They decided against my intro/outro and sound effects.
Enjoy, Matt
