Are You Engaging With Your Team?
"We don’t need more meetings; we need engagement." It’s a common sentiment today, where many teams feel over-managed yet under-engaged. Engaging your team goes beyond task delegation or holding meetings. It’s about fostering genuine relationships, building trust, and making sure every team member feels heard and valued. In a fast-moving work environment, true leadership requires intentional, consistent engagement to keep your team motivated and aligned with the organisation's goals.
WHY Engagement Matters in Leadership
Engagement is the cornerstone of any high-performing team. While communication is critical, it’s only the foundation. Genuine engagement means active involvement in your team’s journey, understanding their aspirations, concerns, and what drives them. Without this connection, even the best strategies can fail to take hold.
When leaders neglect to engage their teams, it can result in:
- Low morale: When team members feel invisible, their enthusiasm dwindles.
- Lack of accountability: If your team doesn’t feel personally connected to the mission, they may lack ownership over their work.
- Increased turnover: Disengaged employees are more likely to leave for environments where they feel valued.
A truly engaged leader fosters a culture of inclusion and connection, where team members are encouraged to contribute meaningfully and their input is genuinely valued.
WHAT Does Meaningful Engagement Look Like
Engaging your team means actively creating opportunities for them to share ideas, express challenges, and provide feedback on key issues. It’s not just about checking in, but truly investing time and effort to understand where they are and what they need to succeed.
Here’s what engagement should look like:
- Listening actively: Are you really hearing your team’s input or just going through the motions?
- Open communication: Do your team members feel comfortable coming to you with issues, or do they feel hesitant to speak up?
- Frequent recognition: Engagement isn’t just about task completion; it’s about acknowledging effort and contributions along the way.
HOW to Engage With Your Team Effectively
Effective engagement involves deliberate actions from leadership. Here are three questions every leader should ask when evaluating their team engagement strategies:
- Are we regularly soliciting feedback? Whether it’s through one-on-one meetings or anonymous surveys, give your team the space to voice their opinions.
- Is our communication two-way? Make sure there’s a balance between talking and listening—engagement is not just about transmitting information but also receiving it.
- Are we creating an environment of trust? Engagement flourishes when team members feel safe and supported. Take steps to build a culture of psychological safety where they can express their thoughts without fear.
Are you truly engaging with your team? The answer lies in the depth of your connections and how frequently you touch base on what truly matters to them.
The more engaged your team is, the more invested they’ll be in their work and the organization’s success. So, take time to reflect on your current engagement strategies and see how they can be improved to foster a more dynamic, accountable, and enthusiastic team.
