Crafting Requests: Building Bridges in Compassionate Communication
Our Asian culture focuses on a strong work ethic, emotions take the back seat as more and more people are told to swallow and push through it… Your work doesn’t care about your feelings! True, your work doesn’t care about your feelings but maybe as humans, we should?
WHY shouldn't we ignore our feelings?
Simply put it our feelings work like a pressure valve, too much pent up pressure or feelings will cause nasty outcomes. Some common signs are
- High stress and tension
- Drastic mood swings
- Burnout
All these would definitely affect our productivity and most importantly our quality of work, not something ideal for the workplace.
In our typical workplace everyone is more inclined to be solution-focused, and we tend to just provide solutions to the problems without sensing the feelings someone is having underlying the problems on hand. Helping one another to be aware of their feelings creates a deeper connection, and it simply shows, “we care”!
WHAT is the process of Empathetic Listening?
Here is the 3 step method that you can easily try to be a more empathetic listener. If someone came up to you and said: “I've been feeling overwhelmed lately with the workload. The project deadlines keep changing, and I'm struggling to keep up.”
Here’s what you can do:
- Identify the FEELINGS (Below is a wheel of emotions / feelings if you are lost for words)
- Address the EMOTION, an example would be “I sense that you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed due to the changing project deadlines. It must be challenging for you.”
- Finding and clarifying the NEED “Can you share more about what you need in this situation? Is it support in managing your workload or clearer communication about project timelines?”
HOW can we better articulate our emotions and feelings?
The Feelings Wheel illustrates the many emotions that we experience in a situation. Sometimes, we may lack the right words to express what we are feeling at the moment. With the Feelings Wheel, you gain an insight and a more nuanced understanding of our feelings.
By articulating our feelings clearly, we can foster a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. Overall, our expanded emotional vocabulary becomes a bridge to understanding those underlying feelings and needs.
