Let's brew our espresso for an insightful shot!

Why Are So Many Employers Unhappy with Gen Z? 🤔

Generational differences in the workplace have always existed, but the dynamic between employers and Gen Z seems especially challenging. Misunderstandings often arise from differing perspectives on work ethic, resilience, and loyalty, leaving both sides feeling unacknowledged.

Last week, at the SAMA-SAMA HUAT event, I spoke on leadership within the SME environment alongside Aaron Chan, CPC, and Wern Earn Ooi, General Manager of Human Resources at Sunway Malls. To my surprise, three Gen Z attendees approached me after my talk to thank me for highlighting their perspectives—a moment that inspired this reflection.

WHY Is It Important to Understand Gen Z

Misinterpretations of Gen Z traits can hinder collaboration and growth. Understanding them allows us to increase work efficiency, leverage potential, and build an inclusive workplace where all generations can thrive.

WHAT Are the Key Traits of Gen Z

Here are three traits employers often misinterpret:

1️⃣ Being Different Isn’t Being Difficult:

They challenge the status quo, trying to push boundaries. Or, they seem not doing work as "hard" as Gen X or Y. Hence, leaders often think they are difficult to work with.

2️⃣ Resilience Looks Different:

Leaving a job doesn’t mean they lack grit. It often signals a need for growth or alignment with their values.

3️⃣ Loyalty Is Measured Differently:

Unlike Gen X or Y, Gen Z values purpose and meaningful impact over tenure or long hours.

HOW Can Employers Bridge the Gap

1️⃣ Acknowledge Their Perspective:

Take time to listen and validate their experiences. Recognition fosters trust.

2️⃣ Adapt Leadership Styles:

Shift from traditional metrics of success to approaches that align with Gen Z values—flexibility, growth, and purpose-driven work.

3️⃣ Redefine Success Metrics:

Focus on creativity, collaboration, and meaningful contributions instead of rigid definitions of loyalty or resilience.

Final Thoughts

Authentically embracing Gen Z as they are is the first step toward building stronger, more inclusive teams. By understanding their perspectives, we can create workplaces that value diversity and unlock potential across generations.

Thought of the day.

💡 Are we measuring resilience and talent the right way in today’s workforce?

That’s the espresso, keep the momentum! ☕
