The Quiet Power of Becoming: An International Women’s Day Reflection
International Women’s Day often invites big conversations about equality, opportunity, and progress.
But this year, my reflection started somewhere much quieter. It started with the mirror.
Just a simple pause to ask myself:
Where was I before? Where am I now?
Life rarely announces the moments that shape us. Growth often happens quietly, through seasons of challenge, unexpected lessons, and small choices we make along the way. Only when we pause do we begin to notice how much has changed, not just around us, but within us.
This year’s theme, “Give To Gain,” made me reflect on what giving really means. Not giving out of obligation. Not giving with the expectation of something in return.
But giving from a place of abundance.
And realising that when we do, something interesting happens: we grow too.
WHY Reflection Matters More Than We Realise
🔍 Growth is easier to see when we pause. Life moves quickly, and most of the time we are focused on what needs to be done next. Reflection creates a rare moment of stillness where we can actually recognise how far we’ve come. Without that pause, we often overlook the quiet resilience and learning that have shaped us.
🌱 Challenges reveal who we are becoming. Many of the moments that transform us don’t feel meaningful at the time. They feel difficult, uncomfortable, or uncertain. But looking back, we often realise those experiences expanded our patience, courage, and perspective in ways success alone never could.
🪞 Self-recognition builds inner strength. We are often generous in recognising others but hesitant to acknowledge ourselves. Yet taking a moment to honour our own journey builds a deeper sense of confidence and compassion, both for ourselves and for others.
WHAT “Giving” Really Means
🤝 Giving presence, not just resources. Sometimes the most meaningful form of giving isn’t financial or material. It’s attention, listening, encouragement, or simply being present for someone when they need it. These small acts often carry more weight than we realise.
💡 Sharing wisdom earned through experience. Every challenge we navigate leaves us with insight. When we share those lessons with others, whether through mentorship, conversation, or support, we turn personal growth into something that benefits many more people.
🌸 Giving from fullness, not obligation. True giving feels different when it comes from a grounded place. When we feel secure in who we are, sharing our time, energy, or knowledge becomes less about sacrifice and more about contribution.
HOW We Can Practice “Give To Gain” in Everyday Life
💬 Start with simple acts of generosity. Encourage someone who is doubting themselves. Offer guidance to someone earlier in their journey. These small gestures create ripples far beyond the moment.
🌿 Create space to grow alongside others. Growth doesn’t always happen in isolation. Often, it happens in community, through conversations, shared experiences, and mutual support.
🧭 Acknowledge your own journey. Before giving to others, recognise the path that brought you here. Your experiences, lessons, and resilience are part of what makes your contribution meaningful.
When I returned to the mirror this year, I wasn’t looking for perfection. I was simply acknowledging the person looking back at me, someone shaped by years of learning, adapting, and growing.
And if I could say one thing to her, it would simply be this:
“Well done.”
Not because the journey has been flawless, but because every challenge, every act of courage, and every moment of giving has quietly built the person she continues to become.
Perhaps that’s the true spirit of “Give To Gain.” When we give from a place of growth, we don’t just uplift others, we expand ourselves too.
This International Women’s Day, maybe the most powerful thing we can do is pause for a moment, look in the mirror, and acknowledge the journey that brought us here.
Happy International Women’s Day. 💜
