How Can We Make Meetings More Than Just "Meetings"? 🤔
Meetings are a routine part of work life. But are they just another checkbox in the day, or can they be an opportunity to inspire, connect, and engage?
Most meetings today are:
🎯 Agenda-driven – Focused on objectives, not people.
🚀 Performance-based – More pressure, less connection.
🥱 Predictable – Same structure every time, lacking positive energy.
While structure and objectives are essential, what if meetings could be more than just meetings?
WHY Is This Important?
Meetings set the tone for collaboration, engagement, and alignment. And, MOST importantly, it happens REGULAR enough for us to optimise it for team culture building. When done right with the right tone and vibes, they:
- Foster better relationships and workplace connections.
- Encourage creative thinking and open dialogue.
- Increase team morale and motivation.
If meetings happen all the time, why not make all attendees worth showing up for?
WHAT Can We Do to Improve Meetings?
Here are some simple ways to rethink, re-do and re-purpose meetings:
1️⃣ Start with Non-Work Sharing
Spend 5–10 minutes on non-work-related discussions. This promotes the idea that there is more to life than work and builds stronger personal connections among colleagues. It is a strong message sent to all that we care for you as a person, and not just the task.
2️⃣ No NO’s Meeting
Instead of shutting down ideas with a “no,” try responding with, “That sounds interesting, what else?” This creates an environment of curiosity and openness. It paves a good team foundation for brainstorming.
3️⃣ End with Impact
Instead of just wrapping up, encourage each participant to share a key takeaway or lesson from the meeting. It makes on-the-job learning a way of life.
It can be more than these too! Ever thought about “Laughing Yoga”? Anything to break the normalcy works!
HOW Can You Implement This?
1️⃣ Test One New Idea Per Meeting
Start small! Introduce one of these strategies in your next meeting and observe the impact.
2️⃣ Involve Your Team
Ask your team what changes they’d like to see in meetings. Engagement grows when people feel heard.
3️⃣ Make It a Habit
Consistency is key. Small changes, when practiced regularly, can transform meetings into meaningful, energizing moments.
Personally, our team has been practicing the “Start with Non-Work” sharing and we have seen how it really strengthens the bond between our members to extend beyond just work!
