Fairness Goes Beyond Right or Wrong
Sometime we have to pause and ask ourselves:
What are we really fighting for?
In a recent conversation with Shereen and Anna during our 4 Se-Ibu podcast, what unfolded was honest, layered, and deeply familiar.
We spoke about workplace dynamics, family expectations, and personal experiences.
About the double standards we’ve normalised.
And the lenses we carry, often without even realising it.
Because many of the tensions we experience aren’t always about what’s visible on the surface.
Sometimes, they come from what hasn’t been said, or what hasn’t been fully understood.

WHY Do These Conversations Matter More Than We Think
🎯 Because we may not actually know what we want. When we’re younger, it feels simple. If someone has something, we want it too. But as adults, that “something” becomes more complex like a promotion, recognition, a sense of fairness. We say we want these things, but how often do we truly pause and define what that means for us?
💬 Because silence creates assumptions. In both organisations and families, decisions are often made by those in authority. But when those decisions aren’t explained or discussed, they can feel unfair. Not always because they are, but because we were never invited into the conversation.
🧠 Because perception shapes our reality. The way we interpret situations is influenced by our own experiences, expectations, and beliefs. Without open dialogue, those perceptions remain unchallenged, and misunderstandings deepen.
WHAT We Began to Realise
🔍 We often chase without clarity. We say we want fairness, growth, or opportunity, but those words can mean very different things to different people. Without clarity, we may find ourselves striving for something we haven’t fully understood.
⚖️ Bias isn’t always the full story. What we perceive as bias may sometimes stem from a lack of communication. When decisions are made without context, it’s easy to fill in the gaps with our own assumptions.
🚪 We limit ourselves to false choices. Buy or don’t buy. Stay or leave. Promote or don’t promote. These binary options can feel definitive, but they’re often incomplete. When we expand the conversation, we open up possibilities we hadn’t considered before.
HOW Can We Approach These Situations Differently
🧭 Pause and define what you truly want. Before reacting, take a step back. Ask yourself: What am I really seeking here? Clarity within creates stronger, more grounded conversations with others.
🗣️ Invite conversation, not conclusion. Instead of assuming intent, create space to ask, listen, and understand. Sometimes, a simple conversation can shift an entire perspective.
🔄 Challenge the limits of “either-or” thinking. When faced with a decision, ask: Are these really the only options? Expanding the possibilities allows for more collaborative and thoughtful outcomes.
What became clear through this conversation is something we don’t often acknowledge:
Not every tension is about right or wrong. Sometimes, it’s about what hasn’t been expressed.
Real growth begins when we choose to move beyond assumptions, and step into honest conversations about what we truly want.
In our families, in our workplaces, and within ourselves.
Thank you to Shereen and Anna for being part of this conversation. For the honesty, the openness, and the willingness to explore what’s often left unsaid.
