Do you have the Happiness Advantage?

Is happiness a by-product of success, or does happiness lead to success?

Traditionally, we believe hard work leads to success, which then brings happiness. However, positive psychology experts like Shawn Achor, author of “The Happiness Advantage,” suggest that this belief is backward. Research indicates that a positive mindset and regular happiness practices can significantly enhance our performance, leading to greater success in life.

WHY is Happiness Powerful?

Achor’s research shows that when we prioritise happiness, we set a strong foundation for success. Happy individuals are more productive, creative, and resilient. They perform better in various aspects of life, from work to personal relationships. By focusing on cultivating happiness first, we unlock our true potential and achieve lasting success.

In short, happiness fuels success, and not the other round.

WHAT are some Happiness Practices?

  1. Exercise: Regular physical activity boosts mood and well-being. It’s been well known that exercising releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine, improving my mood, memory, and focus!
  2. Gratitude Journaling: Daily gratitude practices shift focus to life’s positives. My ritual of noting "Three Little Gratitudes" daily has profoundly impacted my perspective. Focus on the flower and flower grows; focus on the weed, weed grows!
  3. Social Investment: Strong social connections are key to happiness. Having a close-knit group of friends can be a tremendous source of support and joy.

Additional tip, make each practise above simple, it is not a “to-do” list to be happy, but, rather a “to-be” list.

HOW to Implementing Happiness in Your Life?

  1. Set up your environment to support your daily practise: Make your effort to initiate your happiness practises as minimum as possible.
  2. Create small wins: The happiness practises are not target, nor, KPIs for success. Every act in trying to do it is an effort worth applauding.
  3. Get an accountable buddy: Doing and sharing your happiness practises can be fun! Have someone to do it with you, if possible. If not, tell someone you are doing it.

Hopefully by incorporating these practices, you can build a positive foundation for success in your personal and professional life through HAPPINESS!
