Recently a participant’s comment struck a chord within me.. "We don't need luxury; we need support. We'd rather be out serving customers than attending another training session that feels redundant to us." Supporting your team goes far beyond providing perks or organising training sessions. It’s about understanding their real, underlying needs, fostering trust, and empowering them to excel. In today’s fast-paced work environments, true leadership is about recognizing and aligning your support with what truly matters to your people.


WHY Understanding Your Team’s Needs is Vital

Support isn’t one-size-fits-all. While rewards and recognition are important, they don’t always address the core challenges your team faces. Without an in-depth understanding of their real needs, even well-intentioned gestures may fall flat.

When leaders misalign their support, it can result in:

  • Frustration: When the team’s concerns go unaddressed, motivation declines.
  • Decreased productivity: Time spent on initiatives that don’t resonate with the team can waste resources and hinder performance.

Every organisation would have different needs and processes, as well as corporate culture. Hence, there is no one size fits all solution for everyone, as a leader it’s up to us to find the most optimal methods to create an efficient team. So, here are three questions every leader should consider before implementing new solutions: 

  1. Do we truly understand what our team needs from us?
  2. Are we providing support that aligns with those needs?
  3. What are the fundamental needs of our team, beyond the surface desires?
