What Happens When We Allow Ourselves to Learn Again
Last week, I attended a workshop on the four layers of asking questions. I went in with a simple goal, to learn how better questions could support my coaching practice.
But something shifted when I chose to approach the session differently.
Instead of observing as a facilitator or analysing as a trainer, I allowed myself to simply be a learner. Listening, reflecting, and responding to the questions the facilitator guided us through.
The exercise was simple: two stories and a series of questions. Yet within that simplicity, a few unexpected life lessons surfaced.
It reminded me that learning doesn’t always come from complexity. Sometimes, it comes from how present we allow ourselves to be.
WHY Learning Deepens When We Become Students Again
🎓 Because expertise can quietly close doors. The more experience we gain, the easier it becomes to assume we already know what is being taught. Expertise is valuable, but it can also narrow our curiosity. When we consciously step back into the learner’s seat, we allow ourselves to see familiar ideas through fresh eyes.
🧠 Because questions unlock deeper thinking. The workshop focused on the layers behind a question. What struck me was how a simple story could lead to completely different insights depending on how the questions were framed. The right question doesn’t just give answers, it opens new perspectives we might never have considered before.
🌱 Because humility creates space for growth. Choosing to learn again is an act of humility. It reminds us that growth is never finished. No matter how much we know, there will always be another layer to uncover if we remain open enough to explore it.
WHAT Makes Learning Truly Meaningful
💬 The voices in the room. One of the most powerful aspects of the workshop wasn’t just the facilitator’s guidance, but the diversity of perspectives from the participants. People from different industries, experiences, and life stages interpreted the same stories in completely different ways. Each perspective added another layer of meaning.
👀 Moments of collective discovery. There were several moments in the room when someone shared an insight and suddenly you could hear the quiet “Oooh” or “Ahhh” from others. Those are the moments when learning becomes collective, when one person’s reflection unlocks understanding for everyone else.
🤝 Small gestures of thoughtful hospitality. As someone who has spent years training customer service, I couldn’t help but notice the thoughtful care shown by the organisers. The warmth of the welcome, the attentiveness to participants, the small details that made people feel comfortable. These gestures might seem small, but they shape the entire learning experience.
HOW Can We Stay Open to Learning
🪞 Allow yourself to switch roles. Even if you are usually the one teaching, mentoring, or guiding others, occasionally return to the learner’s seat. Let someone else lead. Let yourself listen without needing to contribute expertise. That shift in role can open surprising insights.
👂 Listen beyond the facilitator. Learning doesn’t only come from the person leading the session. It often comes from the people sitting next to us. Their interpretations, experiences, and questions can reveal perspectives we might never encounter in our own thinking.
💡 Pay attention to the experience, not just the content. What we learn is important, but how we feel during the learning process matters just as much. When people feel welcomed, safe, and respected, their minds open. And when minds open, learning flows much more naturally.
I walked into the workshop hoping to refine a skill, but I walked out reminded of something much simpler.
Sometimes the deepest learning happens when we allow ourselves to pause, listen, and be part of the learning rather than lead it. When we stop trying to prove what we know and start becoming curious again.
Perhaps growth doesn’t always come from standing at the front of the room, sometimes it comes from sitting quietly in the chair, raising a question, and allowing ourselves to learn alongside everyone else.
And perhaps that, too, is a powerful form of growth.
