Apple Tech Alert: Emergency Update released for macOS, tvOS

May 25, 2021 7:59 pm

The following update only affects users of Apple products; not Windows-based PCs or Android devices.

Late Monday, Apple released emergency patches for some of its products after hackers were found to be actively using Mac-specific malware to infect computers and other Apple devices.

Primarily affecting Apple's iMac, MacBook, and Apple TV line, this malware allows the hacker to capture screenshots of what the user is doing and seeing without their knowledge. It is not known how long bad actors have been using this vulnerability to illicitly gather information from computers.

Apple has long been known for its supposed lack of viruses and security. However, this latest episode comes on the heels of an Apple executive calling the level of Mac-specific malware "unacceptable".

Apple users running Big Sur are urged to update to macOS 11.4. MouseCalls VIP subscribers and Managed IT clients can rest assured that we are assessing your machines. If you are not on a MouseCalls plan, you need to do this manually. Find your way to the System Preferences panel via the Apple menu, and then click Software Update.

While not specifically addressed in the emergency patch, Apple has released iOS 14.6 for iPhones and iPads as well. This update addresses 43 security problems, so it is highly recommended that you update those devices as quickly as you can.
