Swings, Roundabouts and SEO

Feb 04, 2025 6:55 am

Swings and fucking roundabouts already in 2025 and we’re but a few weeks in.

If your kids have gone back to school this week: YAY. Or maybe you’re missing them being around?

Maybe you’re thrilled to get your routine back or maybe (like I used to feel) you’re buckling under the weight of having to be organized and on time for a plethora of activities and commitments.

I loved school holidays because of my well-known penchant for pajama days. Which are a non-event between school and sport and music lessons and playdates.

Swings and roundabouts.

January, for me, saw a breathtaking plummet in views on both Facebook and Instagram. They’ve never been good (most hovering around 100 views – 20% of followers) to around 30 for most of my posts. The Meta platforms are so noisy now, so crowded, that unless a post gets likes and shares within the first 10 minutes the algorithm doesn’t show anyone else. Shares are the key.

I have always scheduled my posts for the same time of day for years – around 7am (but not on the hour, a little before) which is about when I’m checking in and engaging myself. Advice I’m given is that the platforms prefer that to “post’n’ghost”. They like to see you on the platform engaging with others as well as doing your own thing.

In February I’m trying evenings. Yesterday my post (7pm) had a pathetic 17 views. I’m giving it 2 weeks to get a clear picture.

Swings and roundabouts ---- because ----- January saw the most traffic to my website EVER, including when I’ve run paid ads.

In January 2023 17 people visited my website.

I learnt about SEO that year, and in January 2024, 197 people found it.

Then I began blogging strategically, with long tail keywords, and THIS January 672 people checked out my site.

Do you keep those sort of statistics?

When the numbers are low, and mine usually are, it can be disheartening at first. Keep going and you will see growth. After keeping the stats for 4 years now, I can see the improvements as clear as day. I log in to my “back end” every morning to see the figures from the day before and sometimes that’s all that keeps me going. That little green arrow pointing upwards, be it 1%, 5% 25% vs same day for the previous month and its usually enough when no-one is filling out the contact form.

I have blogs that have been read by thousands of people now. Most of them will never book me and are not my ideal clients, but the consistent traffic, and the regular updates to the site tell Google that my site is worth recommending. Thus increasing the chances of the right couples finding me when they search.

That’s the theory.

If you think you might be interested in learning the structure of these successful blog posts, drop me a line. If there’s enough interest I’ll put together a presentation.

Love you long time.
