Understanding the Counseling Compact
To All Michigan Counselors and MMHCA Members,
We are excited to share a presentation and accompanying written report about the Counseling Compact. The Compact is generating significant discussion within our profession. We want to ensure you have comprehensive information to understand its potential impact on your practice as we work together to understand what is best for MI Counselors. Below we ask you to complete a short survey after reviewing the information we've shared to help us have accurate information and answer your questions as we move forward.
We are excited to share these two important pieces of information about the Counseling Compact:
1. A video presentation (17 minutes) by MMHCA President Chris DeBoer that breaks down key aspects of the Compact. Click here to view the video.
2. A written report analyzing the Counseling Compact and its implications for Michigan Counselors. Click here to download the report.
We encourage you to review these valuable resources to become more informed about the Compact.
A few points to note about the Compact:
- The Compact would allow LPCs to practice across Member States through a "Privilege to Practice" system rather than obtaining multiple licenses.
- While the Compact offers opportunities for practice mobility, it will also allow large-scale operations by venture capital backed platforms to easily benefit as well, significantly increasing competition within Michigan for those in private practice.
- Implementation is not expected until late 2025 at the earliest, pending completion of the central database system.
Why This Matters:
Understanding the Counseling Compact and how it interacts with broader trends in behavioral health is crucial to protecting our profession's integrity and ensuring high-quality care for clients.
We need and welcome your input: Please complete this short survey where you can ask questions and give us information to guide our next steps. The link to the survey is here. We will be providing answers to all questions as soon as possible. We really appreciate your answers and input.
Your engagement in this discussion is crucial as we work together to understand and respond to these potential changes in our profession.
