Clarification from Treasurer, Krystin Sankey
Dear Members,
As Treasurer of MMHCA, I want to clarify the financial report that was referenced in a recent campaign communication.
It is accurate that the court-appointed evaluator found no evidence of financial impropriety or fraud on either side of the organizational divide. That is an important and welcome finding, and I fully support setting the record straight on that point.
However, it's misleading to suggest that the report addresses or resolves the deeper concerns that led to this conflict. From the beginning, the questions raised by board members were not about fraud- they were about transparency, accountability, and financial sustainability.
Specifically, concerns included:
- The sustainability of the budget when paying salaries and considering salary increases, without clear communication about how those would be funded.
- A refusal to provide the Executive Director’s contract when repeatedly requested by board members, making it difficult to evaluate whether duties aligned with compensation.
- Proposals to raise membership dues to cover expenses, without any plan or explanation of what added value would be offered to members in return.
- Unaccounted expenses and missing documentation for credit card charges. Requests for transparency went unanswered.
- Two recurring monthly transfers to an unknown account that ceased without explanation once questions were raised.
- As the Appointed Treasurer, I was not given access to the organization’s bank account or included as a signer, despite being legally and ethically responsible for financial oversight.
These issues highlighted a significant lack of financial controls, including the need for:
- Clear procedures for approval of charges
- Full transparency of all bank and credit card statements not only to the board, but to MMHCA members upon request
- Best practices regarding signers and access to financial accounts, including ensuring that the Treasurer has full visibility and oversight
These are not political talking points, they are standard practices for sound nonprofit governance. They ensure that members’ dues are managed with integrity, that board members are equipped to fulfill their fiduciary duties, and that the organization can grow on a stable and ethical foundation.
Since taking on this role, I’ve worked to bring structure, clarity, and accountability to MMHCA’s financial operations. We’ve transitioned from a deficit to a surplus, improved our reporting systems, and prioritized transparency.
This election isn’t about revisiting the past, it’s about how we move forward. I believe that MMHCA deserves leadership that is committed not just to good intentions, but to good governance.
Thank you for taking the time to understand the full picture.
Sincerely,
Krystin Sankey, MS, LPC
Treasurer, MMHCA
