The Forms That Remain | Opens September 12th, 2026

Mitochondria Gallery is honored to present The Forms That Remain, a duo exhibition featuring paintings by Kenyan artist Nedia Were and sculptures by Sunday Ernest Nnamal. The exhibition explores how value is created, lost, and transformed through our relationship with consumption, nature, and the environments we inhabit.

Nedia Were: Mwanaume ndege (Birdman). Oil and acrylic on canvas. 2026

Sunday Ernest Nnamal creates vibrant wall based sculptures from discarded wrappers, bags, and other plastic packaging. Through careful stitching and reconstruction, he transforms everyday waste into intricate works that question how value is assigned to objects. His practice considers the life of a material beyond its intended use and examines the relationship between consumption, waste, accumulation, and renewal.

Sunday Nnamal. Never Stand Alone. Upcycled plastic confectionery wrappers and thread.

Nedia Were’s paintings explore the relationship between the built environment and the natural world. Living and working in Nairobi, Were reflects on the distance that urban life can create from nature and the desire to reconnect with it. His paintings draw from his experiences in the city, his time in the Ngong Hills, and memories of growing up in the countryside. Nature becomes both a subject and a space for reflection on belonging, memory, and our responsibility toward the environment.

Together, Were and Nnamal consider different forms of preservation. Nnamal gives new life to materials that have been discarded, while Were turns his attention toward the landscapes and experiences that remain essential to our sense of place. Their practices invite us to reconsider what we consume, what we preserve, and what we leave behind.

The Forms That Remain reflects on what remains after consumption and transformation, and the possibility of finding new value in what has been overlooked.
