Mitochondria Gallery is pleased to announce the inclusion of artists Okoye Chukwuemeka John and Sesse Elangwe in the "Double ID" exhibition at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan.
Self Companion. Okoye Chuckwuemeka John. Oil on Canvas. 48 x 48 in. 2022.
"Double ID" presents a selection of works from the CCH Pounder-Koné collection, showcasing artists from across the diaspora as they capture the essence of Black men amidst a rich tapestry of influences. Inspired by the pioneering work of W.E.B. DuBois, the exhibition offers a compelling exploration of inner selves, identity, and the evolving spirit of Black men. On display until October 20, 2024, this exhibition invites viewers to delve into the complexities of the Black male experience through contemporary art.
Among the highlights is "Self Companion" by Okoye Chukwuemeka John, a captivating painting that made its debut in his inaugural group exhibition, "Latitude of Expression," in 2022. This marks Okoye's first museum showcase, an exciting milestone in his artistic journey.
Hidden in the leaves. Sesse Elangwe. Acrylic on Canvas. 46 x 46 in. 2023.
Also featured is "Hidden in the Leaves" by Sesse Elangwe, a striking piece previously exhibited in Elangwe's second solo show, "Life's Blueprint," at Mitochondria Gallery in 2023. This marks Elangwe's fourth museum exhibition, following notable showcases such as "Some Dogs Go to Dallas" at the Green Art Foundation, Dallas, Texas (2024), "Africa Super Nova" at the Kunsthal Kade, Netherlands (2023), and "Sounds of Blackness" at the Metropolitan Museum Manila, Philippines (2023).
