The Forms That Remain | Opens September 12th, 2026

Mitochondria Gallery is honored to present The Forms That Remain, a two person exhibition featuring paintings by Kenyan artist Nedia Were and sculptures by Sunday Ernest Nnamal. The exhibition looks at how value changes through consumption, nature, and the places we live.

Nedia Were: Mwanaume ndege (Birdman). Oil and acrylic on canvas. 2026

Sunday Ernest Nnamal makes wall based sculptures from discarded candy wrappers, chip bags, and plastic packaging. He stitches and rebuilds these materials into colorful works. His practice looks at what happens to objects after they are used. He asks us to consider why some things are valued while others are thrown away.

Nedia Were’s paintings explore the relationship between cities and nature. Based in Nairobi, Were draws from his experiences in the city, the Ngong Hills, and the countryside where he grew up. His paintings reflect on memory, nature, and our connection to the places around us.

Sunday Nnamal. Never Stand Alone. Upcycled plastic confectionery wrappers and thread.

RSVP

Together, Were and Nnamal look at what we choose to keep and what we leave behind. Nnamal gives discarded materials another life. Were focuses on the landscapes and memories that shape our sense of place.

The Forms That Remain asks us to look again at what we consume, what we preserve, and what we leave behind. It considers how overlooked things can hold new meaning and value.
